One of the Best Found Footage Movies Ever Returns To Free Streaming (But the Best Sequel Is Missing)

The Blair Witch Project really popularized the “found footage” style in movies. Since it came out in 1999, many other films have tried to achieve the same success – with mixed results – by putting viewers right in the middle of scary and intense situations. This Halloween, fans of the genre can watch one of the best examples of this style on a streaming service that offers content for free, though its popular follow-up isn’t currently available there.

Oren Peli’s groundbreaking, low-budget horror film Paranormal Activity is now streaming on Tubi. The movie follows a couple who set up home video cameras to document increasingly strange events in their new house. It arrived on the free streaming service on September 1st, along with the fifth movie in the series, Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones. Starting in 2007, the Paranormal Activity franchise has become a horror icon, famous for its truly frightening moments. While Tubi currently offers the first and fifth films, you can find the rest of the series – including what many consider the best sequel, Paranormal Activity 3 – on Paramount+.

Why You Should Watch Paranormal Activity

Created with just one home video camera and realistic effects, Paranormal Activity is still a prime example of how to build horror and suspense. The film focuses on characters and a setting that feel real, and it uses a minimalist approach to scares. Instead of showing monsters, it builds tension through things you *don’t* see – movements, sounds, and creaks at night – turning a familiar home into a frightening place. The slow, creeping suspense and the characters’ increasing helplessness will genuinely scare even seasoned horror fans, and the movie remains unsettling even after repeated viewings.

Paranormal Activity wasn’t the first movie made in the found-footage style, but it’s definitely among the most effective and played a key role in bringing the genre back to popularity. The film became a significant part of popular culture and led to a very successful series of seven movies. Though some of the sequels weren’t as strong, the franchise is still remembered for its amazing suspense and genuinely frightening atmosphere, solidifying its place in horror film history.

Other Horror Movies Now on Tubi

Paranormal Activity and Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones aren’t the only horror films now available on Tubi. Several other scary movies were added on September 1st, such as Drag Me To Hell, Evil Dead (2013), Halloween (2018), I Know What You Did Last Summer, Scream 4, Sinister, and The Cabin In The Woods.

The free streaming service is continuing the Halloween fun throughout the season and has announced what horror movies are coming next month. Starting October 1st, Tubi subscribers can stream An American Werewolf in London, Arachnophobia, Insidious: The Last Key, Jennifer’s Body, The Omen (1976), The Ring, and the first three Saw movies, plus many more.
