One of the Best G.I. Joe Comics Returns After More Than 40 Years

Over the course of many years, various editions of the G.I. Joe comics have surfaced, but only a select few have managed to endure the test of time and leave an indelible mark on fans’ memories. When it comes to creative minds behind G.I. Joe, none are more closely associated with the brand than Larry Hama. This legendary writer has penned countless stories showcasing the heroes and villains of G.I. Joe, with many enthusiasts hailing one of those comics as the greatest ever produced. If you were to ask G.I. Joe fans to name their favorite comic, most would point to a title that was published more than 40 years ago. Now, it’s back in its original format, with Hama leading the charge once more.

In collaboration with Hasbro, Skybound and Image Comics have revealed that the upcoming 321st issue of G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero will be a dialogue-free comic. This marks a significant milestone, as it’s been 300 issues since the last silent issue, which was published in 1983 under the same title and authored by Larry Hama, the current writer of this series. The original issue, titled “Silent Interlude,” was an action-packed narrative entirely conveyed through artwork. In the upcoming issue #321, Larry Hama teams up with artist Chris Mooneyham (known for his work on Marvel’s Wolverine and Sgt. Rock and the Unknown Soldier) to continue this unique approach. The story centers around Snake Eyes and Dawn as they defend The Pit from an unforeseen attack.

As a passionate cinephile, I’d rephrase that as follows: “I’m excited to share that we’re delving into another silent-themed tale, picking up where we left off with the sound-controlling characters from GI Joe Origins #19, as penned by Larry Hama. In this installment, they’ve crafted an airborne version of their sonic weapon and installed it on a covert airship to target the GI Joe base nestled in the Utah desert – Camp Greer. Luckily for Snake-Eyes and Dawn Moreno, they were at the soundproof range in the deepest part of The Pit when this happened, making them the only Joes immune to the commotion. Now, it’s up to these two heroes to take down the airship on their own.

Chris Mooneyham expressed his gratitude for being selected to contribute to this series, specifically issue #321. He noted that interpreting Larry’s vision is always an exciting yet challenging task, and this issue is no different. Mooneyham hopes that our work on

300 issues following the iconic ‘G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero’ #21, Larry Hama has once more impressed,” remarked Alex Antone, Skybound’s Editorial Director. “Together with Chris Mooneyham, Hama has skillfully rekindled the charm of the initial Silent Interlude while providing a contemporary twist for a new audience.

Alongside the primary cover by Andy Kubert (for Marvel’s X-Men) and colorist Laura Martin, issue #321 will also offer a variant cover that is black and white, based on Kubert’s main cover. This issue marks the beginning of a new “Gears of Joe” 1:10 incentive cover series by Steve Beach, and an open-to-order cover from Chris Mooneyham as well.

Skybound just unveiled “G.I. Joe: Cold Slither” #1, a standalone issue penned by Tim Seeley (known for “Rogue” and “Local Man”), illustrated by Juann Cabal (“Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man”), colored by Rex Lokus (“Aquaman”), and lettered by Pat Brosseau (“Batman and Robin”). This special edition brings back the fictional band Cold Slither, made up of the Dreadnoks from the “G.I. Joe” animated show.
