One of the Best Horror Movies of the 2010s Just Returned to Streaming

In hindsight, the 2010s were an era of significant transformation for the horror genre. It successfully merged independent blockbusters with mainstream hits that had been popular in the 2000s, as series like “Saw” became an annual tradition. The 2010s also introduced a flood of new and gifted horror directors, many of whom emerged from the V/H/S horror anthology series and have since achieved remarkable success. For instance, Adam Wingard, now widely recognized following his success with Warner Bros.’ Monsterverse franchise (“Godzilla vs. Kong” and “Godzilla x Kong: The Hidden Empire”), actually began his career in the horror genre.

As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but reminisce about my first encounter with Adam Wingard’s cinematic brilliance through the chilling horror anthologies such as V/H/S and ABCs of Death. However, it was his 2011 masterpiece, You’re Next, that truly catapulted him into the limelight of the horror genre. Fortunately for us fans, this cult-classic is now available once again on streaming platforms. If you haven’t yet had the pleasure of experiencing its terrifying tension or if it’s been a while since your last viewing, I wholeheartedly recommend giving it another go – trust me; it’s well worth your time!

The storyline of “You’re Next” revolves around Erin (Sharni Vinson), a girl visiting the rural Missouri home of her affluent boyfriend, Crispian (A.J. Bowen). Upon arrival, she discovers that the tranquil atmosphere surrounding Crispian’s parents’ anniversary celebration hides deep-seated family conflicts. However, the tense family dynamics take an unexpected turn when the house is attacked by masked assassins, who systematically eliminate family members.

Why You’re Next Is Worth Streaming

There are a lot of streaming recommendations, but this one is worth trusting.

Approximately a decade has passed since the release of “You’re Next”, and its impact on the horror genre is still evident. The movie is widely regarded as having played a significant role in transitioning horror from the “scream queen” era to the more contemporary “final girl” concept, which offers a more nuanced portrayal of horror heroines. Moreover, with an impressive box office revenue of nearly $27 million on a production budget of only $1 million, “You’re Next” served as a strong indication to Hollywood that horror films could generate substantial profits. Furthermore, this success further solidified the popularity and vitality of the “mumblegore” movement in independent horror filmmaking.

The remaining cast may not be as well-known as other ensembles, but it features the late Nicholas Tucci, Wendy Glenn, Margaret Laney, Amy Seimetz, Rob Moran, Barbara Crampton, Simon Barrett, Lane Hughes, and filmmakers from the mumblegore genre such as Joe Swanberg and Ti West.

You can now stream You’re Next on Amazon Prime Video.
