Horror movies have been incredibly popular over the last decade, and a standout film from that period is now available to stream again. We’ve seen huge successes like Robert Eggers’ *The Witch* and the expanding *Conjuring Universe* from James Wan, as well as newer hits such as Zach Cregger’s *Weapons* and the recent adaptation of Stephen King’s *The Monkey*. Back in 2016, another fantastic horror movie arrived, quickly gaining a reputation for its intense suspense and even earning a follow-up film.
The horror film *Don’t Breathe*, directed by Fede Álvarez, is now streaming on Peacock as of October 15th after being unavailable for a while. The movie follows a group of teenagers who attempt to rob a blind man, played by Stephen Lang, thinking he’ll be an easy target, but they quickly realize they’ve made a deadly mistake. A sequel, *Don’t Breathe 2*, released in 2021, focuses on the Blind Man and his adopted daughter as they are threatened by someone from their past. However, *Don’t Breathe 2* isn’t currently on Peacock; you can only stream it on Starz.
Don’t Breathe Is a Masterclass in Suspense and Tension, but Its Sequel Doesn’t Hold Up
Released in 2016, *Don’t Breathe* quickly became a standout horror film, earning an 88% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a “Certified Fresh” label. What sets it apart is its clever twist on the home invasion genre – instead of the homeowners being threatened, the intruders are the ones in danger. The movie builds suspense gradually through a tense cat-and-mouse game, relying on atmosphere rather than sudden scares. Strong direction, visuals, and sound combine with captivating performances from the cast – including Stephen Lang, Jane Levy, Dylan Minnette, and Daniel Zovatto – to create a truly claustrophobic and unsettling experience.
While *Don’t Breathe 2* isn’t a poor film – in fact, audiences rated it highly with an 85% score on Rotten Tomatoes – it doesn’t quite live up to the brilliance of the first movie, which is typical for horror sequels. Stephen Lang is again excellent as The Blind Man, and the film offers plenty of thrilling and violent action. However, it struggles to recreate the original’s unique approach to the home-invasion concept and the intense suspense that made it so effective.
While *Don’t Breathe 2* remains a thrilling ride, it loses what made the original so effective. The first film built tension through its limited setting and subtle approach, but this sequel expands the scope and leans heavily into action, sacrificing suspense. Ultimately, it feels like an unnecessary continuation of the story.
Other Horror Movies Now on Peacock
This October, Peacock is offering a wide range of horror movies for fans. Subscribers can stream classics like *Dead Silence*, *Fright Night*, *The Mist*, *Poltergeist*, *Slither*, and *The Wolf Man* (from 1941). They’ll also find some lighter, spooky options including *Edward Scissorhands*, *Ghostbusters*, *Monster House*, and *Scary Movie*.
