The Joker is arguably the most recognizable villain in comic book history, and with good reason. He’s a compelling character who constantly challenges Batman and terrorizes Gotham. However, a great character needs a talented actor to truly shine, and many have successfully portrayed the Joker over the years. While Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger delivered unforgettable performances, one actor may have surpassed them all – and he was surprised to even land the part, considering another famous role he was known for.
Since it first aired in 1992, *Batman: The Animated Series* quickly became a beloved show. The series was highly praised by critics and remains popular with fans today, introducing iconic performances from Kevin Conroy as Batman and Mark Hamill as the Joker. Interestingly, Hamill initially believed he wouldn’t get the role of the Joker because he was so well-known as Luke Skywalker in *Star Wars*. He explained in a 2024 *Wired* interview that, at the time, there was a lot of discussion about Michael Keaton being cast as Batman despite being known for comedy, and he figured being a ‘Star Wars guy’ would prevent him from getting a chance at the role.
Mark Hamill initially didn’t think he had a chance at landing the role of the Joker. He recalled thinking, ‘Would they really cast Luke Skywalker as the Joker? The fans would be furious!’ Because he believed he wouldn’t be chosen, he was surprisingly relaxed during the audition process. Usually, he feels anxious when auditioning because he wants the part, but this time he thought, ‘Even if I was perfect, they wouldn’t cast me.’ He left the audition feeling confident he’d delivered a great performance, but resigned to the fact it wouldn’t matter. However, when he actually got the part, his confidence vanished and he worried he wouldn’t be able to pull it off.
It’s Impossible to Imagine Anyone Else as Joker in Batman: The Animated Series Now
It’s surprising to remember Mark Hamill doubted he’d get the role of the Joker. While actors like Nicholson and Ledger were also memorable, Hamill’s portrayal is truly unique. He perfectly captured the Joker’s chaotic and unsettling personality, bringing the best aspects of the comic book villain to life in a way that has become legendary. Combined with Kevin Conroy as Batman, they created a Batman and Joker dynamic that’s unmatched.
Mark Hamill was a natural fit for the Joker, but he’d actually played a DC villain before – the Trickster in a short-lived 1990s *Flash* TV series that came after the popular *Batman* movies. While Hamill doesn’t believe the Trickster role helped him land the Joker part, it’s interesting that he once thought the Joker was unattainable, making his eventual casting all the more rewarding.
Interestingly, Mark Hamill’s lack of confidence actually played a big role in him landing the Joker. He said he went into the audition feeling relaxed and unconcerned about winning the part. This allowed him to give a truly genuine performance, letting the casting directors see his full potential and ultimately making him the only viable choice. Because of this, fans of Batman everywhere are thankful for his unique take on the character.
