July saw Prime Video experiencing a significant boost, with the original film “Heads of State” providing an entertaining break during summer movie season. Additionally, “Ballard,” set within the “Bosch” universe, premiered, and the third and final season of “The Summer I Turned Pretty” was also released. Moreover, numerous high-profile films from studio catalogues were added to Prime’s collection, such as “2 Fast 2 Furious,” “Creed II,” “Gladiator,” “How to Train Your Dragon 2,” and “Meet the Parents.” July also welcomed some horror classics like “The Funhouse” and “It Came from Outer Space.
If any of those titles are on your watchlist, don’t forget to add “My Bloody Valentine” (2009) as well! The high-speed, entertaining, and extremely violent remake is now available for streaming. And if you haven’t watched the 1981 original yet, it can be rented for a fun double feature night.
Back in the day, I was part of the audience who witnessed the debut of “My Bloody Valentine 3D” – a film that shared the silver screen with the iconic “Avatar” around the same period. Interestingly enough, “My Bloody Valentine” actually hit the theaters about 11 months prior to “Avatar.” However, beyond their 3D presentation, there’s no other noticeable likeness between Patrick Lussier’s remake and James Cameron’s box-office juggernaut. In spite of this, it’s worth noting that “My Bloody Valentine” managed to rake in a substantial $100 million on a budget that was only $14 million – making it a profitable venture indeed.
As a devoted admirer, let me share my take on the captivating narrative: I’m drawn into the heartwarming community of Harmony, a mining town that experienced an unforgettable tragedy on Valentine’s Day 1997. Six miners found themselves trapped in the mine, with only one miraculous survivor – none other than Harry Warden himself. In an attempt to sustain his life amidst the darkness, he resorted to a chilling act – the murder of the other five miners, leaving behind just enough oxygen for his own survival. A year later, Harry regains consciousness and embarks on a chilling rampage, one that ultimately culminates in the mine. However, he doesn’t leave without leaving behind a young man whose life is forever scarred by this horrific event.
Ten years have passed, and it appears that the Warden has come back to town, yet many residents of Harmony believe he is deceased. Could it be that they were mistaken, or has an imposter donned Warden’s mining attire and started another murderous rampage?
As a devoted movie enthusiast, I must confess that this new production seems to echo certain plot points from the 1981 film I hold dear. For example, it shares the same intriguing twist – a storytelling device I’ve always admired for its execution. And, much like the first time around, the twist is delivered with the same masterful finesse that left me spellbound back then.
2009’s version boasts an exceptional ensemble cast. The principal roles are played by Jensen Ackles from ‘Supernatural’, Jaime King known for her role in ‘Sin City’, and Kerr Smith, famed for his work in ‘Final Destination’. Completing the supporting cast are Megan Boone of ‘The Blacklist’, scene-stealer Edi Gathegi from ‘Superman’ series, original ‘Road House’ actor Kevin Tighe, and horror legend Tom Atkins, recognized for his roles in ‘The Fog’ and ‘Halloween III: Season of the Witch’).
Notably, Lussier’s remake successfully rekindles the essence of ’80s slasher movies. For enthusiasts of this subgenre’s prime time, it is essential viewing, especially considering the disappointment of remakes from the late 2000s (such as Prom Night, One Missed Call, and Rob Zombie’s Halloween). In essence, it leans more towards The Last House on the Left than Sorority Row. Despite lacking a 3D display, My Bloody Valentine is definitely worth giving a try.
