Many films are considered masterpieces, and while creating truly exceptional movies is difficult, Hollywood has a history of producing some of the greatest films ever made. However, very few movie trilogies reach that level of quality. In February, Paramount+ is offering subscribers a chance to watch one such trilogy – a crime masterpiece that’s not to be missed.
All three Godfather films—The Godfather, The Godfather Part II, and The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone—will be available to stream again starting February 1st. The Godfather and Part II are often ranked among the greatest films ever made. You might notice the third film has a different title than the original release; it was initially known as The Godfather Part III but didn’t receive the same critical acclaim. The version coming to Paramount+ is a 2020 re-edit, which was much better received by audiences and critics.
The Godfather Trilogy Is An All-Time Great (And It Still Holds Up)
Released in 1972, The Godfather, co-written by Francis Ford Coppola and Mario Puzo (based on Puzo’s novel), was a huge hit with audiences and critics alike. It broke box office records and won several Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Actor for Marlon Brando, who famously declined his award. The film centers on the Corleone family, led by Vito Corleone, and particularly follows the journey of his youngest son, Michael (Al Pacino), as he evolves from a hesitant outsider into a powerful and merciless mafia leader. The 1974 sequel, The Godfather Part II, continued Michael’s story as the new head of the family, while also showing how Vito rose to power. It was also critically and commercially successful, notably becoming the first sequel to win the Best Picture Oscar. Almost twenty years later, the third film aimed to wrap up the saga, depicting an aging Michael attempting to bring legitimacy to the family’s criminal empire.
Despite being made in the 1970s, The Godfather trilogy remains powerful and relevant today. At its heart, it’s a story about loyalty and honor, and how easily those values can be destroyed by the pursuit of wealth and control. The films offer a complex and human look at morality, forcing us to consider how far people will go to protect their families and gain power, and what the consequences of those choices might be. The fact that this story is told through a captivating crime saga makes it a compelling, though sometimes intense, watch, especially now that all three films are available together on Paramount+.
The Godfather trilogy returns to Paramount+ on February 1st.
