Disney has seen huge success recently with companies like Marvel, Lucasfilm, and Pixar, plus its own animated and live-action movies. However, one Disney property that hasn’t performed as well, despite its potential, is The Muppets. While they’ve tried to make it work – a recent movie series stopped after two films following lukewarm reviews of Muppets Most Wanted, and a TV show The Muppets lasted only one season – Disney is giving the Muppets another chance. A new version of The Muppet Show is coming to Disney+, and now a surprising new movie is also in development.
Jennifer Lawrence recently shared on the Las Culturistas podcast that she and Emma Stone are producing a movie about the iconic Muppet, Miss Piggy. The script is being written by Cole Escola. Lawrence hinted that she and Stone may also star in the film, though details about the plot are currently being kept secret, according to The Wrap.
Disney Is Thinking Outside the Box With Muppets Creative Teams

Jim Henson created The Muppet Show to show he could create entertainment for all ages, moving beyond his success with Sesame Street. The Muppets have always been designed for families, so it’s unexpected to see Disney choosing creators known for more adult-oriented projects to lead new Muppet ventures. For example, the Muppet Show revival is being produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s company, Point Grey Pictures. And the writer for an upcoming Miss Piggy movie, Escola, is known for projects like Oh, Mary! and At Home with Amy Sedaris, which appeal to older audiences.
The new approach is interesting, particularly considering the criticism the 2015 Muppets movie received for some of its jokes. However, the Muppets could really benefit from a boost of new ideas and energy, and Disney should be applauded for trying something different. Plus, the creators involved have proven they can make family-friendly content – for example, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg wrote and produced the animated film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. Importantly, Disney seems committed to maintaining the core spirit of the Muppets. The upcoming Muppet Show special will follow the same format as the original series, featuring a human guest star – Sabrina Carpenter.
Cecily Strong’s background could be a great match for The Muppets. Her work on At Home with Amy Sedaris, which was nominated for a Writers Guild Award for its quirky and unusual comedy, shows she excels at the kind of surreal humor that was a hallmark of the original Muppet Show. This suggests she’ll be right at home working on the new Miss Piggy movie. It’s also exciting that Emma Stone and Natalie Portman, two very successful comedic actresses, are so involved in the project. Their comedic skills should fit perfectly with the playful world of the Muppets.
The upcoming film from Lawrence, Stone, and Escola has a lot of promise. Miss Piggy, with her famously big personality, could easily carry a whole movie. It will be exciting to see what kind of story they tell – maybe a funny, fictionalized biography of her rise to stardom. We also wonder if other Muppets will make an appearance, and it would be surprising if Kermit wasn’t involved, given his history with Piggy. Now that the project is public, hopefully we’ll learn more details soon.
