
Sony’s PlayStation 3 game, released seventeen years ago, instantly won over gamers with its creativity and playful spirit, reminding many of classic Nintendo titles. The game’s worlds were incredibly lively and detailed, even without any added content. What I loved most was the ability to build and share custom levels with other players. I lost hours to this game and its sequels, enjoying challenging platforming and puzzles. It remains a cherished platforming classic, though sadly, all I have left are the memories.
It’s crazy how things change in gaming! I absolutely loved LittleBigPlanet – it was one of my all-time favorite platformers. But it feels like Sony has kind of forgotten about it. It used to be the face of PlayStation, but now Astro Bot has taken over. As a longtime fan, it’s a little sad to realize the days of playing with Sackboy are pretty much over, and that era has just quietly faded away.
Why LittleBigPlanet Was a PS3 Game Changer

When the game first came out in 2008, it quickly became clear it was something special – more than just a typical platformer. It wasn’t just about getting through levels, beating bad guys, or figuring out puzzles. It really focused on letting players be creative, work together, and build a community, which was rare for the genre. I especially enjoyed making my own levels and sharing them, and playing levels created by other players. LittleBigPlanet felt like joining a creative movement, and the adorable Sackboy really brought the game’s playful world to life.
What really set this game apart was how it combined content created by players with social features. Players weren’t just playing the game – they were helping to build it. The controls were easy to pick up, but also powerful enough for experienced players to design incredibly complex levels. And because players shared these levels with each other, there was always something new to play, even long after the original game came out, and this continued with its sequels.
LittleBigPlanet was already a fantastic game, and its sequels made it even better by adding more ways to be creative. I especially love games where you can make your own levels and content, which is why LittleBigPlanet and Halo: Reach are among my favorites. I wish other games, like Gears of War, included similar features. While I really enjoy Astro Bot, it doesn’t offer the same level of creative freedom as LittleBigPlanet.
Sony’s Decision to Pull the Plug on LittleBigPlanet

Although Sackboy is a popular PlayStation character, Sony seems to have largely stopped focusing on the series. The most recent dedicated game was Sackboy: A Big Adventure on the PlayStation 4, but it feels quite different from the earlier LittleBigPlanet games. Unfortunately, the creators of LittleBigPlanet, Media Molecule, have moved on to other projects. To make matters worse, Sony recently removed LittleBigPlanet 3 from the PS Plus subscription service, making it harder for new players to discover the series.
Honestly, it really stings to hear they’re ending support for LittleBigPlanet. I’ve poured years into making and sharing levels, and it just feels like a business choice, not like the game naturally reached its end. It’s a shame because I genuinely think a new LittleBigPlanet could’ve been amazing on the PlayStation 5. The new hardware would make the platforming feel incredible, and they could’ve really expanded the creative tools for the community – which is what always made the game special.
As a huge fan, it really bums me out that LittleBigPlanet seems to be forgotten these days. The last proper game came out in 2020, and lately Sackboy’s just been popping up briefly in Astro Bot, which is cool, but it’s not the same! So many of us are hoping for a new LittleBigPlanet game or even just a re-release of the original trilogy, but it doesn’t look like Sony has any plans for it right now. They seem to be really focused on Astro Bot and making that their big thing, which is fine, but please don’t forget Sackboy!
Astro Bot Is the Silver Lining for Sackboy Fans

Although I’m really disappointed with the direction the Sackboy games have taken, Astro Bot is a fantastic bright spot. It’s easily one of the best platformers ever made – even better than many Nintendo titles, in my opinion! The game offers a truly polished experience with beautiful graphics, precise controls, and a ton of personality. While it doesn’t have the same level of creative tools as the LittleBigPlanet series, the core gameplay is actually superior.
It’s clear that LittleBigPlanet had a big influence on Astro Bot. What began as a free game, Astro’s Playroom, has now become a complete and enjoyable experience. While Sony seems to have moved on from Sackboy, their new, charming mascot, Astro Bot, has a promising future. Team Asobi and Sony are planning more for Astro Bot, but they’re keeping their options open. I’m really hoping they’ll add a level editor in an update, or include creative tools when Astro Bot 2 comes out.
Sony’s shift away from LittleBigPlanet is bittersweet. I really enjoyed Sackboy and the creativity of sharing levels with other players. However, Astro Bot is a fantastic game, and its gameplay is incredibly fun and immersive. As someone who loved LittleBigPlanet since the PS3 days, I have high hopes for the future of Astro Bot and Team Asobi – I’d love to see them create more games, maybe even a spin-off like LittleBigPlanet Racing.
