A top-rated PlayStation 5 exclusive recently received a significant upgrade that many expected to be reserved for the upcoming PS5 Pro, but surprisingly, it’s available now. While Sony’s PS5 Pro support has been inconsistent – the new PSS2 2.0 is a major improvement for compatible games – most PS5 titles still don’t take advantage of it. More concerningly, many major new game releases, even some from Sony itself, haven’t been fully optimized for the PS5 Pro. This has understandably frustrated PS5 Pro owners, and this latest development only adds to their disappointment.
Today, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is no longer exclusive to PlayStation 5 – it’s now available on PC with significant visual improvements. Players on PC will enjoy enhanced graphics thanks to features like ray-traced reflections and ambient occlusion, making the already beautiful game even more impressive. Interestingly, the PS5 Pro version hasn’t received these upgrades, and there are currently no plans to add them. The PS5 Pro also lacks PSSR upscaling, putting it at a considerable disadvantage. Given that previous games have demonstrated these features are possible on the PS5 Pro, it’s unclear why they haven’t been implemented.
What’s Going On With Sony’s Support of the PS5 Pro?
When the original Death Stranding came to PC, 505 Games handled the port. However, Sony is publishing the sequel on PC. This has led to questions about why Sony seems to be prioritizing the PC version over the PS5 Pro version. The reason becomes clear when you consider Sony’s poor software support for the PS5 Pro. So far this year, two out of three of their released games – God of War Sons of Sparta and MLB The Show 26 – haven’t received any PS5 Pro enhancements. The one game that did, Marathon, has very minor improvements.
The absence of ray-tracing improvements on the PS5 Pro wouldn’t be a big deal if a PC version of Death Stranding 2 wasn’t also available. However, since the PC version does exist, the lack of these upgrades is noticeable. So far, Death Stranding 2 has showcased what the standard PS5 and PC are capable of, but it hasn’t really highlighted the benefits of the PS5 Pro.
You might feel like you’ve seen this before – it’s similar to what happened with the PS4 Pro. However, the issues with the PS5 Pro are even more apparent. Sony made a lot of promises with the PS4 Pro, but ultimately didn’t fully support it, treating it as a product for a small group of enthusiasts. The PS5 Pro seems to be following the same pattern.
