As a devoted film enthusiast, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment upon hearing the news that NBCUniversal has decided to pull the plug on one of my favorite sci-fi series gracing our TV screens. Last Friday, it was confirmed that they would be terminating the Alan Tudyk-led ‘Resident Alien’. The show will wrap up its four-season journey with the Season 4 finale episode, now serving as the series finale, airing on August 8th. Despite being on the brink of cancellation after its third season due to a persistent drop in viewership, it managed to secure a reprieve when its budget underwent substantial trimming. Interestingly enough, the series shifted from SYFY to another NBCUniversal cable network, USA, for its fourth season, with both networks airing the season concurrently.
The sci-fi series Resident Alien saw a rise in popularity when it was added to Netflix. Regrettably, this increased streaming interest didn’t lead to higher traditional television viewership. Consequently, the show continued to perform moderately on SYFY and USA. However, it is worth noting that while the series attracted new viewers on Netflix, it struggled to do so on NBCUniversal’s own streaming platform, Peacock.
Resident Alien Comes to An Abrupt End
The television show “Resident Alien” was developed by executive producer and showrunner Chris Sheridan, who also drew inspiration from the comic book series of the same name by Peter Hogan and Steve Parkhouse published by Dark Horse. It was TV Insider who initially broke the news about the show’s termination. Upon hearing this, the showrunner didn’t hold much hope for a renewal due to the series’ previous brush with cancellation. Consequently, they decided to craft a satisfying conclusion. “Given that I knew this was likely our final season, I found it creatively exciting because we could spend time wrapping up some storylines and working towards an ending,” Sheridan said. “I am incredibly proud of how well Season 4 turned out, and particularly proud that we were able to finish as strongly as we did, with a finale that I believe is my favorite episode in the series.
In the show Resident Alien, Alan Tudyk played Harry Vanderspeigle, Sara Tomko was Asta Twelvetrees, Corey Reynolds took on the role of Sheriff Mike Thompson, Alice Wetterlund portrayed D’Arcy Bloom, Levi Fiehler was Mayor Ben Hawthorne, Elizabeth Bowen starred as Deputy Liv Baker, Judah Prehn acted as Max Hawthorne, and Meredith Garretson played Kate Hawthorne. The series kicked off in January 2021 and will conclude this month on both USA Network and SYFY.
In this science fiction show, the main character, portrayed by Tudyk, is an extraterrestrial named Harry who accidentally landed on Earth and adopted the role of a doctor in a small Colorado community. His objective was to eliminate humans, but once he started interacting with the townsfolk, he began to feel compassion and empathy towards them. The series also explored Harry’s personal conflict as he grappled with his alien nature and growing sense of humanity.
You can currently stream the initial three seasons of “Resident Alien” on both Netflix and Peacock. If you’re a fan who wants to delve deeper into the comic book series, you can find the trade paperbacks and omnibus editions available for purchase at any bookstore.
Resident Alien‘s series finale will air on August 8, 2025.
