On the final day of July, HBO Max will part ways with one of the greatest science fiction series ever made, leaving fans disheartened. This period is particularly trying for enthusiasts of television and film, as one might expect that streaming would make it simpler than ever to discover desired content. However, due to frequent changes in licensing agreements and strategic revisions, content rarely remains in its original place for long. This issue is particularly prevalent with cult favorite science fiction shows, as well as those produced internationally.
Over the past five years, HBO Max has been a go-to platform for fans of Doctor Who, featuring seasons 1 through 13 starring Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant, Matt Smith, Peter Capaldi, and Jodie Whittaker as The Doctor. Additionally, it includes the spinoff series Torchwood. Regrettably, these shows will no longer be available on HBO Max starting July 31st, with no other U.S.-based streaming service currently carrying them.

Fans can still stream or buy these seasons digitally on platforms like Apple TV, Fandango at Home, and YouTube, but unfortunately, Prime Video doesn’t offer it. However, digital purchases might be too expensive for many people, and there’s no guarantee of permanent access. As for physical copies, you may need to do some investigative work. The show is available in different collections and formats, so be careful not to buy multiple unnecessary sets if you’re trying to build a collection.
In the United States, the initial broadcast of “Doctor Who” from 1963 to 1989 can still be streamed on two platforms, BritBox and Tubi. BritBox requires an annual subscription of $8.99, while Tubi is free, as it’s ad-supported. However, with the new “Doctor Who” era being more popular among fans, it might become increasingly difficult to find these episodes in the future.
At a critical juncture for “Doctor Who” enthusiasts, the show appears to be facing potential peril due to recent events. In May, Season 15 concluded with an unexpected departure of the current lead actor, Ncuti Gatwa, and since then, speculations about its cancellation have intensified. One of the factors contributing to this uncertainty is the deal between the series and Disney+, which so far, has not been beneficial for the streaming platform, as Disney+ now holds exclusive rights to Seasons 14 and 15 in the United States. If HBO Max’s rights to the earlier seasons are about to expire, it might be possible for Disney to license these seasons and consolidate them on their platform, making it more convenient for fans to binge-watch the series.
At present, we’re left guessing about the future of “Doctor Who”. Until more information comes, why not rewatch your favorite episodes? A reminder that “Doctor Who” Seasons 1 through 13 and “Torchwood” will be departing from HBO Max on July 31st.
