The hit movie Jaws, directed by Steven Spielberg and released in 1975, sparked a wave of shark-themed films. Now, one of the best in that genre is leaving Netflix at the end of October. While Netflix is adding new content in November, it’s also removing some titles, including this popular shark movie and its follow-up.
If you’re a Netflix subscriber and want to watch the shark thriller 47 Meters Down, you have less than a week left! The movie, starring Claire Holt and Mandy Moore, follows two sisters trapped underwater and stalked by sharks after their diving cage malfunctions. It’s leaving Netflix on November 1st, along with the sequel, 47 Meters Down: Uncaged, where a group of teenagers find themselves hunted by great white sharks while exploring underwater Mayan ruins.
47 Meters Down Is a Tense and Claustrophobic Monster Movie
Look, nothing’s going to be Jaws, let’s be real. But “47 Meters Down” actually delivers a pretty solid dose of suspense and thrills – it reminded me of the best moments from Spielberg’s classic. Okay, the characters aren’t super deep, and the story is fairly straightforward, but it takes that incredibly tense shark-in-the-cage scene from Jaws and stretches it into a whole movie! At its heart, it’s a desperate, ticking-clock situation: our characters are battling limited oxygen, murky water, and, of course, a pack of sharks standing between them and safety. It’s a real nail-biter!
This movie is a classic B-movie that cleverly uses its underwater setting and tight camera angles to make you feel trapped and scared, really building the suspense. While critics weren’t blown away (it has a 53% score on Rotten Tomatoes), it’s surprisingly effective at creating a feeling of panic and the struggle to survive. Its sequel, 47 Meters Down: Uncaged, wasn’t a critical darling either (44% on Rotten Tomatoes), but audiences liked it much more, giving it a 68% rating.
Where To Stream 47 Meters Down After It Leaves Netflix?
The movies 47 Meters Down and its sequel are leaving Netflix, but you can still watch them on Prime Video. 47 Meters Down: Uncaged is available to stream for free on Tubi, and both films are also available to rent or buy digitally.
Netflix is losing a couple of shark movies, but it’s adding lots of new content to make up for it. Starting November 1st, subscribers can enjoy popular films like Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Baby Driver, Back to the Future, Crazy Rich Asians, Doctor Sleep, The Hangover, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and Ocean’s 8.
