While Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump is a long-established manga magazine, Jump SQ. is relatively new, having launched less than a decade ago. Despite its youth, Jump SQ. has become home to some truly outstanding manga series, including popular titles like Claymore, Blue Exorcist, and Moriarty the Patriot, many of which have already been adapted into anime. Several other fantastic series are still waiting for their anime debut, notably Gokurakugai by Yuto Sano. This series, which began in 2022, builds upon a one-shot manga Sano released in 2020. It’s Sano’s first ongoing series, and it quickly gained a devoted fanbase with its beautiful artwork, endearing characters, and compelling story.
This manga is released monthly and currently has 32 chapters. Twenty-two of those chapters have been collected into five volumes, all of which are available in English. The sixth volume will be released in Japan on February 6, 2026, with an English release date still to be announced. As of May 2025, over 1.2 million copies were in circulation, and that number has continued to grow. Although the series doesn’t have many chapters yet, there’s enough content for at least one season of anime, and it’s time for anime fans to discover this exciting series from Shueisha.
What Is Gokurakugai About?

This action manga with supernatural elements takes place in Gokurakugai, a lively district with a hidden, darker side. The story follows Tao and Alma, two problem-solvers who work for the Saragi Anti-Maga Organization. They investigate all sorts of cases – from locating missing persons to handling gang problems – but often find themselves dealing with mysterious and dangerous creatures called Magas.
Gokurakugai is plagued by terrifying creatures born from the deceased, possessing immense strength. Tao, hardened by a difficult past, now bravely confronts these threats. Meanwhile, Alma is a kind-hearted teenage boy who is half-human, half-magical being. He’s learning to control his abilities while discovering the truth about who he is and embracing his human side.
