Everyone loves talking about the amazing TV shows of the 1990s, particularly the comedies, but the 1980s were fantastic too! That decade gave us many hilarious and memorable series like Growing Pains, The Golden Girls, Perfect Strangers, ALF, and Night Court. Interestingly, some shows we think of as ’90s hits, like Seinfeld, actually began in the 1980s, proving just how good television was back then. Now, one of the best sitcoms from that era is coming to Prime Video this month.
Get ready to relive the ’80s! All eight seasons of the classic sitcom Who’s the Boss? are coming to Prime Video on March 25th. The show originally aired on ABC from 1984 to 1992, running for 196 episodes. It humorously flipped traditional family roles, focusing on Tony Micelli (Tony Danza), a former baseball player who becomes a live-in housekeeper for advertising executive Angela Bower (Judith Light) in Connecticut. They both have children – Tony’s daughter Samantha (Alyissa Milano) and Angela’s son Jonathan (Danny Pintauro) – and are often guided (and sometimes challenged!) by Angela’s mother, Mona (Katherine Helmond). Who’s the Boss? was a huge hit and received many Emmy and Golden Globe nominations during its run.
Who’s the Boss? Offered a Unique Take on Family for the Time (and We Still Want the Cancelled Reboot)

One reason Who’s the Boss? was so popular was its fresh take on family life. While it still featured a mother, father figure, and children, the family dynamic wasn’t typical for sitcoms at the time. Tony and Sam Micelli weren’t truly part of the Bower family—Tony was Angela’s employee. Angela herself was a successful single mother, a relatively uncommon portrayal on 1980s television. Even after Tony became a presence in the household, Angela continued to be the primary earner, and Tony focused on managing things at home.
“Who’s the Boss?” challenged traditional ideas about families and masculinity when it first aired. The show focused on the friendship between Tony and Angela for most of its run, rather than rushing into a romantic relationship – a surprising approach at the time. This unique dynamic resonated with viewers, and the show remained popular for decades. In fact, a revival series featuring Tony Danza and Judith Milano reprising their roles as Tony and Samantha Micelli was planned for Amazon Freevee, but ultimately didn’t move forward. Freevee, the streaming service intended to host the reboot, was later shut down in September 2025.
A reboot of Who’s the Boss? was considered, but ultimately never happened, which is disappointing. The original series was groundbreaking for its time and ended with some questions still unanswered – specifically, the future of Tony and Angela’s relationship, which intentionally avoided a definitive commitment like marriage to maximize its potential for reruns. It would have been fun to see where their story went, and how the show resonated with a new audience. Unfortunately, that won’t be happening. Instead, fans can rewatch the entire original series when it becomes available on Prime Video on March 25th.
