One of the best Xbox Play Anywhere games just got its notorious save bug fixed for Xbox Ally and Xbox PC

As someone who was really bothered by this, I’m happy to share that a long-standing problem with save files in Death Stranding on Xbox PC has finally been resolved. It’s been a frustrating bug for years, and it’s great to see it fixed.

Death Stranding is a unique and captivating action game created by Hideo Kojima, the mind behind Metal Gear Solid, and his studio, Kojima Productions. Set in a broken-down America after a catastrophic event, you play as Sam Porter Bridges, tasked with reconnecting the scattered remains of civilization while facing dangerous supernatural creatures and ghostly enemies along the way.

Originally, the game was only available on PlayStation, with Sony helping to fund and release it. Since then, it’s become available on more platforms. A PC version was published by 505 Games, and after the initial exclusivity deal ended and the rights returned to Hideo Kojima, it was released on Xbox Series X|S and PC through the Xbox Play Anywhere program, letting players buy it once and play on both Xbox and PC.

This is a big win for Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox on PC, which haven’t always gotten support from major game developers. However, there were some problems, particularly with the PC version.

I noticed Death Stranding has a pretty low rating – just 2 out of 5 stars – on the Xbox PC store. It seems a really frustrating save file bug is the main reason people are giving it such poor reviews.

After playing for between 30 and 60 minutes, players began experiencing save file issues, leading to lost progress. The problem was unpredictable – saving would work for a time, then suddenly stop without any notice. While various solutions have been suggested over the years, many were complicated and required a lot of effort.

Good news! Microsoft, 505 Games, and Kojima Productions have resolved the problem, and a solution is now being delivered through an update to the Xbox Gaming Services app on PC.

To see if the problem with Death Stranding Director’s Cut is fixed, open the Xbox PC app. Click your profile picture, then go to Settings and About. Look for the “Gaming Services” version number – it should be 32.106.13001.0 or higher. I personally tested this with version 33.108.12001.0 and confirmed that game progress is now saving reliably.

We’re happy to report that a save file issue affecting Death Stranding was mostly limited to recent Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X purchases – it wasn’t a problem on Xbox Series X|S. The game is well-optimized and performs great even when running on low power, making it ideal for extended play on Z1E and Z2E handheld gaming devices. The issue has now been resolved.

Death Stranding Director’s Cut is available now on the Xbox Store for $39.99. You can play it on both Xbox consoles and PC, and it’s an Xbox Play Anywhere game, meaning one purchase gives you access on both platforms.
