Despite being impacted by the 2023 Hollywood strikes, 2024 turned out to be a great year for movies, only slightly behind 2025 in terms of success. Big hits like Deadpool & Wolverine, Inside Out 2, and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice brought audiences back to theaters. While many of these films are now available on streaming services, HBO Max subscribers have less than a day left to watch one of last year’s biggest movies.
If you enjoyed Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, now’s the time to watch it on HBO Max! The film, which features the two legendary monsters working together to defeat the powerful Skar King and the icy Titan Shimo, will soon be removed from the streaming service. As the fifth installment in the MonsterVerse, the 38th Godzilla movie, and the 13th King Kong film, it was a huge success, earning $572 million worldwide – making it the most popular MonsterVerse movie and one of the top films of 2024. But it will no longer be available to stream on HBO Max after January 3rd, just a few months after its debut in July.
Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire Is One of the Most Divisive Movies in the MonsterVerse
While Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire earned the biggest box office numbers of any film in the MonsterVerse, it didn’t receive very good reviews. It’s actually the most controversial movie in the series, sharply dividing both critics and viewers. It currently has a 54% rating from critics and an 89% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The movie was a hit with both critics and viewers, offering impressive monster action and visual effects. However, many critics thought the film prioritized spectacle over substance, lacking a compelling story. Liz Shannon Miller of Consequence noted the movie had the potential to be a unique adventure but was ultimately held back by a predictable script and uninspired choices. David Fear from Rolling Stone urged the filmmakers to allow the iconic characters more depth in future installments.
Despite mixed reviews from critics, the film was a huge hit with audiences, ensuring another adventure for Godzilla and Kong. Legendary Pictures announced in May 2024 that a sequel, titled Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, is planned. David Callaham is writing the screenplay, Grant Sputor will direct, and the movie is currently set to come out in 2027.
Where to Stream Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire After It Leaves HBO Max?
Okay, so if you’re like me and were hoping to catch Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire on streaming, things just got tricky. It left HBO Max already, and now it looks like it’s completely off all the major streaming services. That means if you want to see it, you’re going to have to buy the Blu-ray, rent a digital copy, or purchase it online. There’s a chance it might show up on streaming again down the road, but it wasn’t listed in any of the January 2026 lineups, so don’t hold your breath.
