Science fiction is full of beloved heroes, and one of the most famous is finally getting a new movie. The project has been in the works for five years, but it’s now gaining momentum with writers from Marvel and the producers of Dune leading the way.
The classic sci-fi hero Buck Rogers is getting a new adaptation, and it’s finally moving forward. After Legendary Pictures obtained the rights five years ago, they’ve hired Zeb Wells – known for his work on Deadpool & Wolverine and as an executive producer on Marvel Zombies – to write the screenplay.
We don’t have any information about the story or script yet, but having a writer on board is a good sign. Legendary is considering Buck Rogers as a potential big franchise with possibilities for movies, a live-action show, and anime, but right now, only the movie seems to be moving forward.
Buck Rogers was created by Philip Francis Nowlan and first appeared in a short story published in the 1929 magazine, Amazing Stories. The story follows a World War I soldier who falls into a long sleep and awakens centuries later, in the 25th century, to find himself fighting in a war against invaders.
Buck Rogers first appeared in comic strips before becoming popular on radio and in films. Many fans fondly remember the 1970s NBC series, Buck Rogers in the 25th Century. While there haven’t been many new versions of Buck Rogers since then, Legendary Entertainment is now aiming to revive the character and build a major franchise around him.
Legendary Pictures has seen significant success with movie adaptations this year, especially with A Minecraft Movie, which earned over $957 million globally. They’re also planning a Street Fighter movie for next year, hoping it will become a major franchise if audiences enjoy it. Beyond new adaptations, Legendary is expanding existing franchises like Dune, with more projects planned for the future.
