Anime often explores surprisingly dark themes, even in series known for lighthearted characters. Take One Piece, for example – despite its generally cheerful tone and Luffy’s adventures with his crew, it doesn’t shy away from deeply emotional and traumatic backstories. This willingness to tackle mature subjects is common in anime, and one series in particular stands out. Its unexpectedly gritty content, combined with its unique art style, caught many viewers off guard but ultimately contributed to its growing popularity.
I first encountered Made in Abyss as a manga back in 2012, and the creator, Akihito Tsukushi, has been consistently delivering intense and often dark stories ever since. It’s become a really solid part of the anime world, expanding into an anime series, several movies, and even a video game. I recently learned that over twenty-two million copies of the manga are now in circulation – a huge accomplishment! With a new anime movie coming out later this year, I expect that number to climb even higher as more people discover this captivating, yet dark, story.
Made in Abyss Hits The Big Time
I recently learned about the new Made in Abyss movie, titled The Awakening Mystery. It looks like we’ll be following Riko, Reg, and Nanachi as they continue their journey through the dangerous world of the Abyss. It’s a similar move to what we’ve seen with Demon Slayer – taking a popular anime series from TV to the big screen, which has worked really well for a lot of anime lately. The last Made in Abyss release was The Golden City of the Scorching Sun back in 2022, so it’s been about four years since we’ve seen these characters on screen.
If you’re interested in learning more about The Awakening Mystery beyond the trailer, here’s a description from the studio Kinema Citrus: Riko is poisoned by a dangerous creature called the Abyssal Gangrew while exploring the fourth layer of the Abyss. She’s rescued by Nanachi, and together with Nanachi, she continues her journey to the fifth layer, where they’ll encounter Bondrewd. There, they meet Prushka, a girl raised by Bondrewd who has never left his care. Prushka is fascinated by Riko’s stories of adventure and wants to join them, but Bondrewd is unfortunately using her in his experiments.
The story then follows Prushka’s transformation into Riko’s White Whistle, leading the group to the sixth layer of the Abyss, known as “The City of No Return.” There, they discover the “Village of the Lost,” inhabited by people with their own distinct way of life, and meet a princess named Faputa. After Faputa grants a wish that causes the village to fall apart, Riko and her companions ask her to join them on their journey to the seventh layer of the Abyss.
