One of the Darkest Horror Movies of the Last 20 Years Lands on Peacock (& the Ending Is Truly Brutal)

As a horror fan, I’m definitely feeling the Halloween spirit, and that means a lot of scary movie watching! Everyone’s either hunting for the next big fright or revisiting old favorites, and all the streaming services are delivering. But Peacock has really gone all-in on horror this fall, and they’ve just added a film with what I think is one of the most genuinely disturbing and unforgettable endings I’ve ever seen.

Peacock began streaming the movie The Mist on October 1st, adding a well-known adaptation of Stephen King’s work to its offerings. The film, released in 2007 and directed by Frank Darabont—who has adapted King’s stories multiple times—stars Thomas Jane. The Mist follows the story of a small town enveloped by a frightening mist one morning. The townspeople have no idea what lurks inside, but quickly realize being caught in it means certain death.

In the movie, Jane portrays a father struggling to protect his family as they’re trapped by a mysterious mist. He’s determined to either find a way out or survive until it lifts. The film builds to a devastating and intensely difficult-to-watch climax. That final scene is particularly impactful and is often the most memorable part of *The Mist* for viewers.

The Mist Ending Explained

As the title suggests, we’re about to reveal major spoilers for the ending of *The Mist*. If you haven’t seen the movie and want to avoid finding out how it ends, please watch it now before continuing to read.

As the movie nears its end, the townspeople discover terrifying creatures are hiding inside the mist, which shows no signs of lifting. With military assistance seeming unlikely, David, played by Jane, decides to drive his family and friends through the mist in a desperate attempt to escape. Unfortunately, their car runs out of gas, leaving them stranded and vulnerable to the monsters, knowing they won’t survive.

There was a loaded gun with four bullets in the car, but five people inside. David, believing he was saving them from a terrible fate in the mist, made the heartbreaking decision to shoot everyone, including his son. He was left alone to face the monsters. However, as he stepped out of the car, horrified by what he’d done and prepared to die, the mist began to lift. Just then, the military arrived, heavily armed, and quickly eliminated the retreating monsters.

In short, David killed his son and everyone he loved, but the danger vanished almost immediately. His sacrifice was pointless, leaving him utterly alone. The movie concludes with Jane’s scream as David falls to the ground.

Talk about a real happy ending, right?
