Horror movies are getting increasingly gory again, and one 2010s film is proving especially popular right now, recently becoming available on Tubi. While films like Terrifier, Evil Dead Rise, and In a Violent Nature have recently brought a lot of blood and guts back to theaters, this earlier movie was already delivering on the gore front. Now, you can watch it for free!
If you’re easily disturbed, you might want to skip Piranha 3D. Director Alexandre Aja’s 2010 remake—and its sequel, Piranha DD—became available on Tubi on January 1st. The movie is known for its extreme gore, similar to the film Hostel, and features a wildly over-the-top horror-comedy about a spring break party that goes horribly wrong. An earthquake unleashes hundreds of ancient, flesh-eating piranhas into Lake Victoria, and the partygoers quickly become their prey.
Piranha 3D Successfully Restarted the Piranha Franchise
Don’t expect a deeply serious thriller like Jaws when you watch Piranha 3D – and that’s perfectly okay! This movie is pure, over-the-top fun, a spectacular showcase of gore and mayhem. It fully embraces the spirit of classic, low-budget creature features, delivering creatively gruesome scenes with an estimated 80,000 gallons of fake blood and plenty of flying body parts. Piranha 3D doesn’t take itself seriously, and that’s exactly why it’s so entertaining – it’s a memorably cheesy, blood-soaked thrill ride.
Okay, so Piranha 3D had a bit of a mixed reception. Audiences weren’t exactly blown away – Rotten Tomatoes gave it a pretty lukewarm 41% score. But honestly, from a business perspective, it was a win! Critics actually liked it more, giving it a 71% rating, and it made a fantastic $83 million worldwide on a budget of just $24 million. More importantly, it brought the piranha franchise back to life, leading to a sequel, Piranha 3DD, in 2012. There were even plans for two more films – Piranha IIID and Summer of the Piranha – but sadly, those never materialized.
Other Horror Movies Now on Tubi
Tubi offers a great selection of free horror movies, and they’ve added even more recently! January brought titles like Brightburn, the 2013 Evil Dead, Hereditary, Pearl, Talk to Me, The Amityville Horror, and The Cabin in the Woods. February will see even more scary movies added to Tubi’s free lineup, including Anaconda, Dark Harvest, The Hills Have Eyes, Insidious: The Last Key, and When A Stranger Calls, all available at the start of the month.
