The 1990s were a fantastic time for movies. Many film fans consider it a golden age, with exciting developments in all kinds of genres. We saw incredible progress in computer-generated imagery, leading to visually stunning films. Disney experienced a creative boom, and while big-budget blockbusters dominated, independent films also flourished. The decade launched the careers of many now-famous filmmakers, and now, one of Quentin Tarantino’s early and most acclaimed thrillers will be available to stream for free on Tubi.
Though written by Quentin Tarantino, the 1993 film True Romance was directed by Tony Scott. It features a fantastic cast including Christian Slater, Patricia Arquette, Dennis Hopper, Gary Oldman, Brad Pitt, and Christopher Walken, with a memorable cameo from Val Kilmer – a scene he’s now famous for. The film is a critically acclaimed romantic crime thriller that’s become a beloved cult classic and will be available to stream on Tubi starting February 1st.
True Romance Is An Underappreciated Masterpiece
Though True Romance didn’t perform well at the box office—earning only $12.6 million despite positive reviews and matching its $12.6 million budget—it’s now considered a classic. Many believe it’s one of Tony Scott’s best films and a standout work in Quentin Tarantino’s career. The story centers on Clarence Worley, a huge Elvis fan, who falls for Alabama Whitman, a call girl hired by his boss. After a quick wedding, Clarence, spurred on by what he believes is a vision of Elvis, kills Alabama’s exploiter and unwittingly steals a bag of drugs. This sends the newly married couple on a dangerous run from the mob.
While True Romance definitely feels like a product of the early 90s, and that might seem a little dated now, it’s also part of its charm. The story wouldn’t quite work the same way if it were made today. Beyond that, the film is a fantastic mix of the creative styles of Quentin Tarantino and Tony Scott. Tarantino’s distinctive writing is all over it – he actually wrote the script to fund his first film, Reservoir Dogs. But Scott’s signature action style is equally present, making for a truly unique viewing experience. And let’s not forget Val Kilmer’s incredible, and surprisingly perfect, portrayal of Elvis! With True Romance coming to Tubi in February, it’s the perfect time to check it out – if only for that unforgettable performance.
True Romance arrives on Tubi February 1st.
