2025 was a huge year for horror movies, especially for Warner Bros. Discovery. The studio released several films that were very successful, and one of them is now a popular hit on HBO Max thanks to viewers quickly tuning in.
Zach Cregger’s suspenseful mystery film, Weapons, about the disappearance of several children, premiered on HBO Max on Friday, October 24, 2025. It quickly became the most popular title on the streaming service in the U.S., hitting #1 on the Warner Bros. Discovery platform.
The film starring Julia Garner earned $267.5 million globally, with $151.5 million of that coming from tickets sold in the U.S. and $116 million from international sales. Made with a budget of $38 million, the movie proved to be a significant financial win for Warner Bros. Discovery.
Alongside the main cast, Weapons features Josh Brolin, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Benedict Wong, Cary Christopher, and Amy Madigan. Currently, other popular titles on HBO Max include The Substance at number two, Bring Her Back at number three, and the DC Studios film Superman from 2025 at number four.
The horror film Weapons quickly gained popularity on HBO Max just as Warner Bros. Discovery started planning its awards campaign. The studio is hoping to secure Oscar nominations for the film in major categories like Best Picture, Best Actress (Julia Garner), and Best Director (Zach Cregger).

Zack Moser, in a review for ScreenRant’s ‘Weapons,’ noted that despite some funny moments, the film remains a true horror experience, leaning more towards the style of ‘Scream’ than ‘Cabin in the Woods.’ Currently, ‘Weapons’ has a 93% critics’ score and an 85% audience approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
In an August 8, 2025 interview with Variety, director Greg Cregger revealed he has ideas for future installments in the Weapons universe. He said he’s “excited” about another potential story, but doesn’t plan to work on it immediately. Cregger clarified that it won’t be his next project, or likely the one after that, but he hopes to bring it to life someday.
