The show isn’t losing popularity. Streaming numbers increased noticeably yesterday, proving its continued appeal.
According to FlixPatrol, the TV show NCIS has moved up to third place on the most popular shows on Paramount+ in the United States. It’s currently behind Landman at number one and South Park at number two. NCIS continues to be popular on Paramount+ in most countries worldwide, with the exception of Ireland and the United Kingdom.
I was so thrilled to hear that NCIS is coming back for the 2026-27 season! It’s fantastic news for fans like me. And it’s not just the original NCIS – both Origins and Sydney have been renewed too! I’m especially excited for a third season of Origins, getting to see a young Gibbs’ story unfold, and I can’t wait for the fourth season of Sydney to bring more action from Down Under. CBS really knows what its audience wants!
CBS has renewed several shows for another season, including the dramas Tracker (Season 4), Matlock (Season 3), Elsbeth (Season 4), and Fire Country (Season 5). The sitcom Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage will return for a third season. Reality favorites Survivor and The Amazing Race have also been picked up for Seasons 51 and 39, respectively.
NCIS Remains a Cornerstone Franchise for CBS
As a TV critic, I’ve been following NCIS since its beginnings, and it’s fascinating to remember how it started. The show was actually born out of JAG – a spin-off, really. Essentially, it centers around a team of special agents who investigate crimes involving the military. It’s a procedural, but with a strong focus on those unique cases.
Before NCIS officially premiered on CBS in September 2003, the show introduced its original main cast in a two-part episode of JAG in April of that year. Mark Harmon starred as Leroy Jethro Gibbs, the popular leader of the NCIS team based at the Washington Navy Yard in Washington, D.C., for the show’s first 18 seasons.
Mark Harmon departed NCIS at the beginning of Season 19, and Gary Cole joined the cast as NCIS Supervisory Special Agent Alden Parker. Despite leaving the main series, Harmon continues to be a significant part of the NCIS universe through the prequel, NCIS: Origins, and even…
It’s typical for actors to come and go on long-running crime shows like NCIS. Because of this, the cast in Season 23 is quite different from the original cast in Season 1. Sean Murray and Brian Dietzen are the only actors who’ve been with the show since the beginning, playing Timothy McGee and Dr. Jimmy Palmer, though they didn’t become main characters until Season 2.
Rounding out the main cast of NCIS are Brian Dietzen as Jimmy Palmer, Wilmer Valderrama as Nick Torres, Katrina Law as Jessica Knight, Diona Reasonover as Kasie Hines, and Rocky Carroll as Leon Vance.
The popular show NCIS has spawned six spin-off series to date: Los Angeles (2009), New Orleans (2014), Hawai’i (2021), Sydney (2023), Origins (2024), and Tony & Ziva (2025).
I was really sad when NCIS: New Orleans ended in May 2021 – it was the first of the spinoffs to finish after seven great seasons. Then, just two years later, NCIS: L.A. signed off after an amazing 14 seasons in May 2023, and that was tough to see too.
Both Hawai’i and Tony & Ziva were canceled after short runs. Hawai’i ended after three seasons in 2024, and Tony & Ziva was canceled after only one season in December.
A new episode of NCIS will air on CBS on March 3rd. In the meantime, you can watch all shows in the NCIS universe on Paramount+.
