One of the Mario Movies’ Biggest Changes to the Nintendo Character Officially Explained by Chris Pratt

Fans of Super Mario Bros. have a lot to look forward to this spring! Three years after the huge success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Chris Pratt and Charlie Day are back as Mario and Luigi in the sequel, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which arrives in theaters on April 1st. While everyone is excited to see these classic video game characters on the big screen again, Nintendo has made some updates to Mario – and Pratt recently shared one of the most significant changes.

Fans of Mario might notice a change to his famous phrase, “mamma mia,” in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Chris Pratt explained to ScreenRant that the adjustment was made to better reflect his character’s background as an Italian-American from Brooklyn.

When asked about the most frequent sound he makes while voicing Mario, Pratt described it as a lot of physical exertion – getting hit, jumping, and bouncing. He identified the sound specifically as “Mamma Mia.” He noted the original Mario often said it in Italian with a high-pitched delivery, and he found it odd that a character from Brooklyn would use the phrase so often without the Italian accent.

It was always a challenge, honestly. People would point out that the title, ‘Mamma Mia,’ is written a certain way, and I’d get it – if I was trying to show respect or be impressed, I’d naturally say it with a bit of that Italian flair. But the thing is, most people wouldn’t just say ‘Mamma Mia’ unless they were deliberately doing an Italian accent. So, figuring out how to naturally include ‘Mamma Mia’ in conversation was surprisingly difficult.

I’ve always made an effort to change things up. Perhaps that’s why progress felt slow – they might have been trying to downplay the issues because I wasn’t completely satisfied with the results, but it felt like a dramatic, over-the-top reaction.

The “Mamma Mia” Line Change Makes Sense (Even if Fans May Not Like It)

Chris Pratt changing Mario’s famous “Mamma Mia!” line has sparked debate among fans, but it actually makes sense. Pratt pointed out that Mario is a Brooklyn native, so his delivery of the line would naturally sound a little different than the classic version. This adds a thoughtful detail to his portrayal of the character. However, some fans and critics weren’t thrilled with Pratt’s overall voice acting as Mario, questioning the accent he used, as it didn’t quite sound like a typical Brooklyn accent either.

This is Chris Pratt’s second time voicing Mario, so it will be interesting to see how he’s refined his performance and if he includes any well-known phrases from the classic Nintendo game. Viewers will find out when the movie is released on April 1st.
