Though critics weren’t kind to this 2001 psychological thriller when it first came out, it’s definitely worth checking out now that it’s on Netflix. Netflix US has a great selection of intense and suspenseful thrillers like *The Platform*, *1922*, *I’m Thinking of Ending Things*, *The Perfection*, and *The Woman in the Window*. And on October 18th, 2025, another often-overlooked gem from the 2000s joined the lineup.
The 2001 thriller *Don’t Say a Word* is available to stream on Netflix again after being absent for a couple of years. While the movie, written by Anthony Peckham and Patrick Smith Kelly and directed by Gary Fleder, wasn’t a huge critical or financial success – it cost $50 million to make and earned $100 million, and currently has a 23% rating on *Rotten Tomatoes* – it recently became very popular on Netflix when it was added in 2023, and it could climb the charts again now that it’s back.
Why You Should Watch Don’t Say a Word on Netflix

In the thriller *Don’t Say a Word*, Michael Douglas plays Dr. Nathan Conrad, a child psychiatrist drawn into a dangerous criminal case. He’s asked to help find a stolen jewel by unlocking secrets hidden in the mind of a young, troubled patient, played by Brittany Murphy. While the plot is fairly standard, Michael Douglas gives a strong performance, and Murphy effectively shares the screen with her seasoned co-star. The film also features notable actors like Sean Bean, Skye McCole Bartusiak, and Famke Janssen.
The plot of a skilled man’s daughter being kidnapped to force a treasure hunt is a familiar movie trope. However, *Don’t Say a Word* overcomes this predictability thanks to the strong connection between the actors Douglas and Murphy. While the film is emotionally rich, it’s also a thrilling psychological race against time that’s sure to keep you on the edge of your seat. Released 24 years ago, it remains a surprisingly effective and well-made film today.
With Michael Douglas recently retiring, it’s a great time to revisit his incredible career spanning six decades. While not everyone loves it, and it’s not perfect, *Don’t Say a Word* is a surprisingly good film that deserves more attention. Now that it’s available on Netflix, it could even become a hit again, nearly 25 years after it first came out.
