Now that spooky season has ended, Prime Video is still delivering for horror fans. They already have a solid collection of scary movies, including titles like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, The Descent, and Nosferatu, and they’re adding more every month. This November, a classic slasher film arrived on the platform, and viewers can now decide if the 2019 remake lives up to the original.
Both the original 1988 film Child’s Play and its 2019 remake are now available to stream on Prime Video, starting November 1st. Both movies feature Chucky, a killer doll who goes on a violent spree. The first film, directed by Tom Holland and featuring Brad Dourif as Chucky’s voice, launched a hugely successful horror franchise and is a classic of 1980s slasher films. The 2019 remake, directed by Lars Klevberg, updated the story with Mark Hamill providing the voice for the frightening doll.
The Child’s Play Remake Made a Major Change to the Original
When Child’s Play came out in 1988, it introduced Chucky, a uniquely terrifying horror villain. He wasn’t just a toy gone wrong – he completely flipped the idea of harmless toys on its head. Chucky also stood out from the typical horror killers of the era, who were often large and silent. The 2019 remake kept the basic story of a killer doll, but it shifted the focus from supernatural elements to a science fiction explanation.
The first ‘Child’s Play’ movie begins by revealing how Chucky became a killer, showing Charles Lee Ray, a serial killer, using voodoo to put his soul into a Good Guy doll while being pursued by the police. The 2019 remake, which has a 64% approval rating from critics and a 57% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, threw out the voodoo element and gave Chucky a new backstory: he’s a high-tech doll with a broken artificial intelligence. Whether this change was successful is debatable, as the updated version proved divisive among both critics and viewers.
The 2019 film updated the Chucky character by tapping into current fears about technology, which some viewers found made him more believable. However, others felt this approach made Chucky less frightening and the story as a whole less engaging. Both this movie and previous installments depict Chucky as a relentless villain with very violent attacks.
Where to Stream the Rest of the Child’s Play Franchise?
Right now, only the first Child’s Play movie and the recent remake are available to stream on Prime Video. While there are six other films in the Child’s Play series, they aren’t currently on any major streaming services. However, fans can still rent or buy Child’s Play 2, Child’s Play 3, Bride of Chucky, Seed of Chucky, Curse of Chucky, and Cult of Chucky on demand.
The popular horror film Child’s Play led to a TV series called Chucky, which continued the story after Cult of Chucky. The show ran on Syfy and USA Network from 2021 to 2024 and can now be streamed on Peacock and AMC+, or rented/purchased on demand.
