The Blade Runner series is a legendary sci-fi saga, and fans have been waiting a long time for the next installment, which is scheduled to come out in 2026. The original Blade Runner film, directed by Ridley Scott, is considered a landmark achievement in science fiction. Its unique cyberpunk and neo-noir aesthetic has had a huge impact on countless other movies, TV shows, and video games, cementing its place as a cornerstone of the genre.
After a long wait, the world of Blade Runner is returning to screens. The original film, Blade Runner, saw a continuation in 2017 with Blade Runner 2049, directed by Denis Villeneuve. Villeneuve built upon Ridley Scott’s initial vision, creating a sequel that was critically acclaimed, nearly matching the success of the first movie. In 2021, an anime series called Blade Runner: Black Lotus added another chapter to the story, but now, fans have a new installment to look forward to.
Blade Runner 2099 Will Release In 2026

The next Blade Runner project is confirmed to be released in 2026, and a live-action TV series, Blade Runner 2099, will arrive on Amazon Prime Video later this year. Michelle Yeoh will star as a character named Olwen, and Hunter Schafer will play Cora. While details about the plot are scarce, the series is a sequel to both Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049.
Originally announced in 2021 with Ridley Scott as an executive producer, the show faced production hurdles, including delays caused by the 2023 WGA strike. Filming eventually started in May 2024 and finished in December, and it’s now nearing its release after several months of post-production work.
The new series, Blade Runner 2099, is coming nearly ten years after Blade Runner 2049, and will be a key test of how long the franchise can last. The 2049 film generated a lot of excitement as a continuation of the classic sci-fi movie, and even brought back Harrison Ford. However, despite the hype, it only earned $276.6 million at the box office, while costing $185 million to make.
Launching Blade Runner 2099 is a gamble, as it’s a TV series based on a film with a smaller fanbase. While Blade Runner is a well-known brand, the success of Blade Runner 2099 isn’t certain. It has the potential to breathe new life into the sci-fi series, but it’s still unclear if it will be as influential as the original film.
