Speaking of unforgettable periods in X-Men’s history, the ’90s truly stand out as exceptional. This was the time that marked the debut of Jim Lee and Chris Claremont’s X-Men, Rob Liefeld’s X-Force, and numerous groundbreaking storylines. Among these significant events, one that left a lasting impression was the Age of Apocalypse, an alternate reality where Charles Xavier met his demise, leading Magneto to form the X-Men. Marvel has revisited this era several times, but for its 30th anniversary, they’ve got something significant planned that involves one of the most beloved characters born from the event.
In a recent announcement, Marvel unveiled the covers for the first issue of “X-Men: Apocalypse” by writer Jeph Loeb, who penned the original series, and artist Simone Di Meo, an Eisner Award nominee. This six-issue event will be flanked by one-shots titled “Alpha” and “Omega“. Di Meo provides the main cover for this series, with support from Arthur Adams, Fanyang, and Joe Madureira. Particularly noteworthy is Di Meo’s cover as it showcases the return of Nate Grey, otherwise known as X-Man, the alternate version of Cable from “Age of Apocalypse”.
The Cable Variant Makes His Long-Awaited Return
Introduced in 1995’s X-Man #1, a comic series from Jeph Loeb and Steve Skroce that became part of the four main X-Men stories during the “Age of Apocalypse” era, Nate Grey made his appearance. In this alternate timeline, Nate was genetically engineered by Mister Sinister using the DNA of Cyclops and Jean Grey, while Cable’s mother, Madelyne Pryor, was a clone of Jean. Quite a bit of genetic manipulation occurring there, don’t you think?
In the alternate world known as the Age of Apocalypse, X-Man was one of the rare individuals to survive. He eventually made his way into the main Marvel Universe. Despite his series being terminated, his fan base ensured he continued to appear occasionally in X-Men stories. As time progressed, Nate Grey assumed a “Shaman” role and, using Legion’s body, established another reality – the Age of X-Man.
Simone Di Meo’s rendition of “X-Men of Apocalypse” #1 depicts Nate Grey engaged in combat with Sabretooth, who has a chain encircling Nate’s neck and body. Arthur Adams’ cover showcases the romantic entanglement among X-Men members Rogue, Magneto, and Gambit. Fanyang’s artwork emphasizes the popular character Blink from “Age of Apocalypse.” Joe Madureira’s cover concludes with Storm, as he was one of the creators behind the original “Age of Apocalypse” and is providing unique covers for each issue of “X-Men of Apocalypse.” These special covers by Madureira will also be accessible in alternate, uncensored versions.
For years now, I’ve been an avid admirer of Jeph’s work, and I can honestly say that his collaborations with artists like Joe Madureira have made for some unforgettable reading experiences. It’s a tremendous honor for me to be involved in this project, but let me tell you, the responsibility is not lost on me. With so many people familiar with Jeph’s work, I feel the pressure to deliver something truly remarkable alongside him.
A celebration for the ‘Age of Apocalypse’ wouldn’t be whole without X-MAN, according to Loeb, who is excited to reintroduce Nate Grey. I’m looking forward to delving back into the story of this powerful psychic mutant, who finds himself torn between two realities as his original universe merges with the current one, causing chaos. The X-Men of Apocalypse have emerged, but the Uncanny X-Men may not receive him warmly…
Not only is the first issue of X-Men of Apocalypse set to be thrilling for fans, but it will also include an intense clash between the X-Men of Apocalypse and the Uncanny X-Men. The premiere issue of X-Men of Apocalypse Alpha arrives on September 3rd, with the first issue following on November 5th.
