Originally housing shows such as Seinfeld, How I Met Your Mother, and recent revivals like That ’99s Show and Fuller House, Netflix has recently added a 90’s sitcom that was once popular but now underappreciated to its streaming service. This series, airing from 1996-2002 over six seasons, was a favorite among fans during its run, but has since transformed into an undervalued gem. Fortunately for those who haven’t seen it yet, all episodes are now readily available on Netflix for viewing.
As a dedicated movie enthusiast, let me tell you about a show that I used to love – “The Steve Harvey Show.” This series found our beloved Steve Harvey stepping into the shoes of Steve Hightower, a one-time funk sensation who decided to switch gears and become a high school music teacher at Booker T. Washington High School in Chicago. The plot thickened as he crossed paths with his old classmate, the principal, Regina Grier (portrayed by Wendy Raquel Robinson), and formed strong connections with his students. This classic sitcom initially hit TV screens on the WB network.
In addition to featuring Harvey in the lead role, this series boasted an exceptional ensemble consisting of Cedric the Entertainer as Cedric Jackie Robinson, Merlin Santana as Romeo Santana, William Lee Scott as Stanley ‘Bullethead’ Kuznocki, Wendy Raquel Robinson as Regina ‘Piggy’ Grier, Terri J. Vaughn as Lovita Alizay Jenkins Robinson, and Lori Beth Denberg as Lydia Liza Gutman. Over the span of its six-season run, the series aired a total of 122 episodes. Originally intending to conclude after the fifth season, Harvey eventually agreed to return for a final, abridged season following negotiations with the executives at the WB.
The show was popular for the network, filling out their lineup that also included shows like “7th Heaven”, “Sister, Sister”, “Dawson’s Creek”, “Charmed”, “Felicity”, “Roswell”, “Angel”, and “Gilmore Girls”. At the time, The Steve Harvey Show provided an opportunity for the network to increase diversity on television, which wasn’t as prevalent then. The last episode of The Steve Harvey Show, titled “California or Bust-Up,” aired on February 17, 2002. In this episode, Steve Hightower and Regina Grier considered a job offer for Regina to become the principal at a private school in California.
During its broadcast, The Steve Harvey Show garnered much acclaim, not just for its representation of diverse characters, but also for its comedy, acting, and the rapport between its cast members. Throughout its duration, the program was often recognized with numerous award nominations. For instance, Merlin Santana was nominated for the ALMA Award for Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series twice, in 1999 and 1998. Tracy Vilar received an ALMA Award nomination for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series in 1998 as well. Additionally, the series was frequently nominated for Image Awards (NAACP), with Steve Harvey himself being nominated for the award for Outstanding Host in a News, Talk, Reality, or Variety (Series or Special) – Individual or Ensemble in 2017. Interestingly, the show even won the Image Award for Outstanding Comedy Series in 2002.
In recent times, it’s my observation that Harvey is predominantly recognized for his role as the host of Family Feud, deviating somewhat from his acting past. However, I must acknowledge that this charismatic comedian hasn’t entirely abandoned the silver screen. He graced our movie theaters in 2012 with a performance in Think Like a Man, an adaptation of his own best-selling book, and has also appeared in films such as Johnson Family Vacation and Love Don’t Cost a Thing.
