One of the Wildest 1990s Sci-Fi Series Is Leaving Netflix (But Are We Ever Getting a Sequel?)

The 1990s were a fantastic era for film. The decade produced many unforgettable movies spanning all genres, with filmmakers experimenting and taking chances. It was a time of innovation, pushing boundaries with new technologies like CGI and storytelling approaches. These creative risks paid off, giving us classics like Pulp Fiction, Jurassic Park, and countless other memorable films. The ’90s also saw a surge in science fiction, sometimes delightfully over-the-top, and now one of the most extravagant sci-fi blockbusters from that era is leaving Netflix.

The action film Face/Off, starring Nicholas Cage and John Travolta, will be leaving Netflix on January 19th. Released in 1997, the movie features a terrorist and an FBI agent who have a radical surgery to switch faces, voices, and appearances. The agent hopes this will help him find the location of a bomb, though things don’t go as planned. Despite the chaos, Face/Off was a huge hit, and there are rumors of a sequel in development.

Okay, so the premise of Face/Off is totally wild, but honestly, it’s a fantastic movie! When it came out, everyone loved it – both regular moviegoers and critics. What really blew me away was how Travolta and Cage didn’t just play characters, they played each other playing those characters – it was such a clever role reversal! Director John Woo really got to flex his creative muscles with this one, and it’s considered one of his best films. Plus, it was a massive hit at the box office, earning almost $250 million worldwide on an $80 million budget – that’s amazing!

Despite the original film’s popularity, a sequel wasn’t announced right away. In 2019, Paramount revealed plans for a remake with a completely new cast. However, by 2021, it was reported that Adam Wingard, director of Godzilla vs. Kong, would actually be directing a sequel, not a remake. There haven’t been any further updates since then. For now, fans who enjoy the film’s unique premise—said to have influenced Internal Affairs and, ultimately, Martin Scorsese’s The Departed—will have to stream it on Netflix while it’s still available.
