Tom Hanks has become one of Hollywood’s most famous actors, starting with his early stage work in Shakespeare plays like The Taming of the Shrew and Hamlet, and continuing with recent roles in films like The Phoenician Scheme and the upcoming Toy Story 5. Over the last five decades, he’s starred in memorable movies such as Saving Private Ryan and Apollo 13, winning several Academy Awards along the way. And now, one of his most beloved films is newly available on many streaming and rental platforms.

Forrest Gump Is a Masterpiece That Gets Worse With Age
Forrest Gump resonated with audiences and became a beloved classic because it’s a heartwarming story about an unlikely hero. Its simple, fable-like style made it easy to connect with emotionally. Add to that powerful acting, iconic lines, and a broad, visually stunning portrayal of American history, and it’s no surprise the film quickly became a masterpiece with a lasting impact.
Even thirty years later, Forrest Gump remains a powerfully emotional film that vividly captures the spirit of its time. Its cultural impact is undeniable, but recent discussions have questioned how well it holds up today. While some of the visual effects now look dated and the film may not feel as profound as it once did, deeper criticisms suggest Forrest Gump presents a simplified and often inaccurate view of American history, glossing over important complexities. Additionally, the way the film depicts people with disabilities and women is now considered problematic by many.
While Forrest Gump remains a cherished and nostalgic film, and is still considered one of Tom Hanks’ best performances, it doesn’t quite stand the test of time compared to other movies from that era.
