A truly great villainous turn in wrestling requires careful planning. It needs to feel natural and believable to the audience, but still come as a shock when it happens on TV. To make it work, you have to build up to it, and tonight’s Monday Night Raw definitely laid the groundwork for a major turn involving one of WWE’s biggest stars.
In the semifinals of The Last Time Is Now tournament, LA Knight defeated Jey Uso, earning a spot in the finals against the winner of Solo Sikoa and Gunther. Although Jey fought hard, LA Knight secured the pinfall victory. Jey reacted with intense frustration, violently crashing into equipment outside the ring – including a Prime display – before storming away, strongly suggesting he’s about to become a villainous character.
Knight earned a tough victory tonight. He’s been a favorite with the fans for some time, despite a recent series of setbacks. He weathered a strong attack from Jey tonight and came out on top, putting him one step closer to a match with John Cena. While we can discuss that potential match later, many believe Knight deserves to be Cena’s final opponent.
We don’t recognize this Jey Uso…

Later, Jey continued to show his frustration during a conversation with Jackie Redmond backstage. While he’s typically friendly with Redmond even after tough matches, this time he was clearly annoyed and didn’t want to discuss Bron Breakker or the future of the World Heavyweight Championship.
For the last six to eight months, Jey has consistently been one of WWE’s most popular performers, and his entrance continues to be a favorite with fans, as seen at WarGames. Despite some online discussion questioning his popularity, the enthusiastic reactions he receives in arenas across the country clearly demonstrate his strong connection with the WWE Universe.
It’s interesting because the crowd also reacted positively when he seemed to be losing, so even though this shift to a villainous character might change his popular entrance and merchandise sales, it could actually be a good move for Jey. It looks like fans are open to seeing where his character goes next.
As he prepares to become a villain, the event that turns him will probably involve someone he used to be friends with or work alongside. This suggests he’ll likely betray someone currently seen as a ‘good guy,’ like his brother Jimmy Uso, Cody Rhodes, CM Punk, or Roman Reigns. I think CM Punk is the most likely candidate, especially if they’re scheduled to compete for the championship, but we’ll have to wait and see what happens.
