One Piece Clears Up A Huge Gunko Plot Hole

Following the full reveal of the Five Elders and their immense power on Egghead, One Piece’s Egghead Arc has now introduced the Holy Knights, the next major threat from the World Government. This highly skilled group has become central to the story on Elbaf, with characters like Shamrock, Gunko, Sommers, and Killingham being showcased. Among them, Gunko stands out as the most fascinating, and it’s not simply because she appears to be a vessel or host for Imu.

I’ve been following Gunko since she first appeared, and honestly, she’s been a huge source of speculation! Her strange abilities, unique look, the meaning behind her name, and that intriguing connection she has with Brook – it all adds up to a fascinating mystery. But the biggest question mark since her introduction has been why she *didn’t* have the “Saint” title, or any clue about which World Noble family she came from. A lot of us wondered if she was *ever* a Celestial Dragon to begin with. Well, the latest chapter of One Piece finally answered that question, and it officially confirms Gunko’s World Noble lineage! It’s so exciting to finally have that settled.

One Piece Confirms Gunko Belongs to the Manmayer Family

Wow, in Chapter 1160 of One Piece, we finally get a proper reintroduction to Gunko! It’s during the God Valley flashback, and we learn she’s actually St. Gunko of the Manmayer Family. She *did* briefly appear with another member of the family in Chapter 1159, but this latest chapter really goes all out. They gave her her own introduction box, which is awesome, and it’s completely cleared up any confusion about who she is and her role! It’s so cool to finally get some clarity on this character!

The confusion surrounding Gunko’s name stems from her initial introduction in One Piece Chapter 1137. Her introduction box simply stated “Gunko” along with her devil fruit’s name. This was quite unclear, especially when compared to Shamrock’s introduction, which detailed both his rank among the Holy Knights and his family connection to the Figarland Family. The error in Gunko’s introduction was later fixed in Volume 112, which became available in Japan on July 4th, 2025.

I noticed in the physical copy of Chapter 1137 that Gunko is officially stated to be a member of the Manmayer Family. However, because the English version of the volume hasn’t been released yet, the digital chapter on sites like Viz and Manga Plus hasn’t been updated. This left a lot of fans wondering about Gunko’s background as a World Noble, so it was good to finally get clarification in the latest release. While this update does resolve a long-standing inconsistency, it unfortunately disproves many fan theories surrounding Gunko. Still, I’m confident that One Piece has a lot more in store for her, and I’m excited to see what future revelations await.

One Piece is available to read on Manga Plus and Viz Media.
