Please be aware that this article reveals major plot points from the One Piece manga! The God Valley Incident was a pivotal moment in the world of One Piece, significantly altering the existing power dynamics. While the incident led to Garp being hailed as a Marine Hero, recent events in the Elbaf Arc have shown the difficult consequences of his fame. Garp has been a complex character since the Summit War Saga. Despite his disapproval of the World Government, the Celestial Dragons, and even his own Marine organization, he remains committed to his responsibilities. Many fans question his approach, as he hasn’t taken bolder steps for change compared to his son, Monkey D. Dragon.
I’ve noticed a lot of people think Garp remaining with the Marines is a good thing. While he’s had a long career with plenty of impact, it’s really what happened 38 years ago that made him the ‘Marine Hero’ everyone knows. Recently, in Chapter 1166, the Marines completely rewrote the story of that event, giving Garp all the credit for defeating Xebec. It’s interesting, because even though he seemed unhappy with how things were presented, he still chose to stay on as a Vice Admiral.
One Piece’s Garp Decides to Protect People From the Bottom

After everything that happened, I found out the World Government had been building me up as a hero, but completely covering up the truth about what really went down at God Valley. It led to a huge argument with Sengoku, because I made it clear I had a lot to protect and wanted to keep my position as Vice Admiral. Honestly, I could have easily become an Admiral, maybe even Fleet Admiral, but I never wanted the promotion. A big part of it is my deep hatred for the World Nobles – taking a higher rank would mean I’d be forced to serve those corrupt people directly, and I just couldn’t do that.
Throughout his decades of service as a Marine, Garp dedicated himself to training the next generation, believing it was the best way to improve the organization. We recently learned more about the rift between Garp and his son, Dragon, which stemmed from the devastating events at God Valley. Dragon, facing punishment for disobeying orders during the incident, was actually on death row, but Garp rescued him. This event drastically altered both their lives, leading them to pursue different paths, each convinced it was the only way to create real change.
