On August 10, 2025, Toei Animation has announced a sneak peek at the upcoming episode of One Piece. This preview includes quick glances at the upcoming episode and a sample of the show’s latest opening song titled “Carmine.” Surprisingly, this will be the fourth time the anime gets a new opening within four months since its previous one was released. The Japanese rock band Ellegarden will debut their performance of “Carmine” with an all-new animation in episode 1139, marking it as the 28th overall opening theme and the 14th since the series’ two-year time-skip.
With the debut of “Carmine” in episode 1139, it means that the previous theme song, “Angel & Devil,” will have one of the shortest tenures in the series. “Angel & Devil” first appeared in episode 1123, which was the first episode aired post the show’s six-month break. In comparison to other themes like “Brand New World” and “The Peak,” which only lasted for 15 episodes each, “Angel & Devil” will have been the opening theme for just 16 episodes of One Piece. Following “UUUUUS!” and “Angel & Devil,” “Carmine” will be the third song used during the current Egghead Island Arc.
Ellegarden’s “Carmine” Will be the Next One Piece Anime Opening
Since the 2000s, Ellegarden has been a rock band producing numerous songs. For the first time, they will contribute an opening theme song titled “Carmine” to the anime series One Piece. Notably, this is the band’s debut in creating a song for an anime opening. The narrative of One Piece reaches its peak as the Strawhat Crew and their allies confront one of the Five Elders. Luffy has previously clashed with Kizaru, a Marine admiral and one of the most powerful Devil Fruit users within the One Piece universe. In recent episodes, the tragic past and relationship between Kuma and his daughter, Jewelry Bonney, have been revealed.
Although some viewers might wonder why another opening song is necessary given the recent release of the last one, it’s worth mentioning that the ending of Egghead Island carries a distinctly different mood compared to the preceding part of the story arc. The finale is packed with action and intensity, while the earlier part was heavier on somber emotions and drama. “Angel & Devil” mirrored the more subdued atmosphere prevalent in the anime at that time, whereas “Carmine,” as suggested by the quick glimpse we’ve seen so far, seems to align with the more action-oriented tone of the climax, much like a rock song.
