One Piece Is Finally Going To Reveal the Last Piece of Shanks’ Origin (And It Confirms He Was Destined For Greatness)

As a huge One Piece fan, I’m completely hooked by the latest flashback! It started by showing us how the legendary King of the Giants, Harold, met his end, and now it’s diving into the full story of what’s become one of the most talked-about events in the series: the God Valley Incident. Seriously, it’s being called the biggest historical reveal *ever*, showcasing a massive battle between the pirates and the World Government. What’s really fascinating is that this incident is famous for the unlikely team-up between Monkey D. Garp and the Roger Pirates to defeat Rocks D. Xebec – who everyone thought was the most dangerous pirate around. But, the flashback has flipped the script! It’s revealing that a lot of what we *thought* we knew about Rocks’ supposed evilness wasn’t accurate, essentially rewriting a lot of long-held beliefs we had about him.

Now that One Piece has fully revealed the God Valley Incident, the story is poised to explain many long-held fan theories. While the fates of Rocks and the significance of Harold are key to the incident’s resolution, it’s also where the popular character Red-Haired Shanks first appeared. A previous bonus chapter showed the Roger Pirates discovering Shanks during this event. Several details about Shanks’ past have since been confirmed, but one question lingered: how he ended up inside a treasure chest. The latest developments in One Piece now appear ready to finally answer that mystery as well.

One Piece Is Ready To Reveal How Shanks Ended Up in the Treasure Chest

Details about how Shanks was discovered by the Roger Pirates were shared in a special extra volume called One Piece 4 Billion, personally written by the author and released at the debut of One Piece Film: Red. This special issue explained that the Roger Pirates found Shanks as a baby – just one year old – inside a treasure chest they obtained during the God Valley Incident. This revelation has sparked a lot of curiosity, particularly regarding how Shanks originally came to be in that chest.

The story is now exploring the incident in more detail, even showing that Shanks’ mother is also from the island, suggesting the mystery will soon be solved, with Monkey D. Dragon set to be the final key. In One Piece Chapter 1160, Dragon, while working for the Navy, understands he was involved in a terrible event and appears to take in Shamrock and Shanks, who were young twins, hoping to make amends. However, Chapter 1161 shows that while Dragon intended to save both children from what he thought was a planned execution, he could only escape with Shanks, as Shamrock was captured by one of the God’s Knights.

This suggests that Dragon will be instrumental in putting Shanks in the treasure chest that the Roger Pirates will eventually find. As things become more chaotic, it’s increasingly clear that Dragon has difficulty protecting Shanks on his own. With the Celestial Dragons attacking both children and adults, and the Rocks Pirates becoming more dangerous, Dragon appears to leave Shanks in the care of the Roger Pirates. Considering Shanks’ fate to become a pirate with Roger’s crew, it’s quite fitting that Dragon, who later becomes the leader of the Revolutionary Army, is the one who initially sets Shanks on his path, particularly since Shanks is known as the “Child of Destiny.”

Shanks’ Journey as a Great Was Forged (Better Than Luffy’s)

One Piece has consistently explored the idea of inherited willpower, and with Monkey D. Luffy increasingly resembling Joy Boy, or the Sun God Nika, it sometimes feels like his role as the chosen one is a bit contrived. In contrast, Shanks, who has recently been established as the Child of Destiny, seems to embody the role more organically, particularly considering the discovery that Dragon might have been instrumental in setting him on this path from a young age. Now that Shanks’ backstory is confirmed, the story is primed for his next actions and his significant influence as a destined character in the series’ concluding saga.

It’s becoming increasingly obvious that Luffy, Shanks, and Marshall D. Teach (Blackbeard) will be the most important characters in the final battle, all wielding similar power and influence. Many fans previously thought Shanks might end up opposing Luffy, but recent events and his pursuit of becoming a legendary pirate suggest he won’t be a villain. While we still don’t know exactly what he’ll do in the story’s final arc, as One Piece nears its conclusion, we’re sure to find out soon.
