Please be warned: This article reveals major plot points from the One Piece manga! The current flashback in the One Piece manga is wrapping up, and we’re finally learning what happened to Harald. The story begins shortly after the Holy Knights attacked Elbaph, trying to enslave the Giants. The World Government has always wanted the Giants’ incredible power, and with a large war looming, they need as many strong allies as possible. The manga explains the heartbreaking events surrounding Harald’s death and why Loki was imprisoned for such a terrible act. Harald wasn’t just the strongest king Elbaph ever had; he was also deeply loved, but his reign ends tragically when he trusts the World Government.
Harald was willing to give his life to create a brighter future for his people, but Imu and the Five Elders had a different fate in mind for him – one he didn’t see coming. They rewarded his service – and the questionable acts he committed for the World Government as a Holy Knight – with immortality. This wasn’t a gift, however, but a way for Imu to completely control him. Harald was turned into a pawn, forced to attack his own people, until Loki intervened to stop him.
Harald Entrusted Elbaph to Loki Before Taking His Final Breath in One Piece Chapter 1170

Harald wasn’t present when Loki was born and left by his mother, but he loved Loki just as much as his first son, Hajrudin. As the prince of Elbaph, Loki strongly resembled Harald, sharing his strength thanks to their giant ancestry. Harald also appreciated Loki’s kindness and compassion, qualities he hoped for in a future king.
Fourteen years ago, a terrible event led Harald to ask a great deal of his son, Loki. Harald believed only Loki could end his life, but to do so, Loki had to eat the mythical Devil Fruit of Elbaph. Harald wanted Loki to portray him as a cruel ruler and announce to the kingdom that he had defeated the Giant soldiers. Harald didn’t worry about his reputation, as he would be gone. His plan was for Loki to be seen as a hero and become the new king, someone who could finally lead Elbaph towards a brighter future.
Despite being forced to kill Harald, Loki refuses to let anyone remember his father as a bad person. Now that the truth behind the tragedy is known, Loki will soon confront the Holy Knights and rescue the children. Harald wanted his son to take over as ruler, so it’s almost certain Elbaph will have a new leader after fourteen years.
