One Piece on Netflix Has Disappointing News For Anime Fans

In recent years, the popular shonen series One Piece has been experiencing something of a “golden era,” largely due to multiple endeavors by Luffy and his Straw Hat Pirates crew. The final saga of this beloved manga and anime is unfolding concurrently in both formats, presenting the Thousand Sunny’s team with some of their most challenging battles yet. Meanwhile, Netflix is gearing up for a second season of its live-action adaptation next year. However, it appears that the success of the live-action Straw Hats on Netflix isn’t mirrored in other areas, as suggested by a recent report.

In light of the success of the anime “One Piece,” Netflix has chosen to prioritize airing the most recent episodes on their platform. Similar to Crunchyroll, they’ve launched the latest installment of the Egghead Island Arc. However, the viewership numbers have not met Netflix’s expectations this year, with approximately 3.7 million views for the Egghead Arc. This falls short compared to many other shows on their platform. To put it into perspective, “Demon Slayer’s” Entertainment District Arc had a staggering 4.9 million views, and that doesn’t include the rest of the anime series. Another contender, the newcomer “Sakamoto Days,” has managed to amass an impressive 24 million views, surpassing “One Piece” significantly.

Why Is One Piece’s Egghead Arc Sinking?

A major factor contributing to less-than-expected viewership of Luffy’s recent battle against the World Government on Netflix is its inconsistent release schedule compared to Crunchyroll. Unlike Crunchyroll, which broadcasts new One Piece episodes simultaneously with Japan, Netflix usually has a six-day delay before airing the same content. This gap often leads anime enthusiasts to seek out other platforms for immediate access to the latest installments crafted by creator Eiichiro Oda. Currently, it seems there are no plans to adjust Netflix’s release schedule for the Grand Line, which could hinder the series from achieving its full potential in terms of overall popularity.

In the ongoing One Piece anime, viewers have experienced a range of feelings this year as Luffy and his team engage in fierce battles against Saturn and other military members. Recently, the emotional impact was heightened when Kuma’s past was explored. With his family devastated and forced to become a weapon of war for the World Government, Kuma found an opportunity for vengeance by targeting Saturn, one of the Five Elders. Although this punch did not result in Saturn’s death, it was a long-awaited moment for many shonen series fans.
