Jump Festa 2023 revealed exciting news: a new anime adaptation of One Piece called The One Piece, created by WIT Studio and Netflix. The original One Piece anime, produced by Toei Animation, has been running since 1999 and has over 1100 episodes, which can be daunting for newcomers. Over the years, the anime’s pace slowed down, resulting in a very long series due to its weekly release schedule. Though the Elbaph arc has slightly altered the production timeline, the anime still adapts roughly one chapter of the manga per episode. While the original series remains incredibly popular, this remake hopes to draw in new viewers with a more consistent pace and updated animation.
Despite waiting over two years, fans haven’t received many updates on the anime’s release, and production appears to be taking longer than expected. Even the newest teaser from Netflix only showed character designs and sketches previously revealed earlier this year, without any news about when the anime might actually come out. This hasn’t generated much excitement, as fans are still hoping for a trailer or at least a key visual.
The One Piece Will Adapt The East Blue Saga
We don’t yet know how many seasons the new anime remake will have. However, it will begin with the East Blue Saga – the very start of the story, where Luffy sets out to become a pirate and gathers his first crew before heading to the Grand Line. The trailer showed concept art of iconic scenes from this initial saga, and the character designs reflect how they appeared at the beginning. This remake will reintroduce fans to these cherished characters and the start of Luffy’s adventure, now with updated animation.
Although the original anime’s early episodes weren’t as slow-paced as those after the time skip, the upcoming remake by WIT Studio will update the outdated 4:3 aspect ratio – a common format in the 1990s that’s no longer used. While the original animation style might feel familiar and nostalgic, it’s aging and could turn off new viewers. This announcement came the same year as the popular live-action series, which brought the story to a global audience. The remake hopes to do the same, and though it’s taking longer than anticipated, WIT Studio may share a significant update this year or by 2027.
