One Piece Reveals How One Beloved Character Could’ve Been Saved, But Creator Had Other Plans

Please be aware that this article contains spoilers from the One Piece manga! One Piece is filled with memorable characters, but Portgas D. Ace stands out as one of the most popular. As a key member of the Whitebeard Pirates, he was the son of Gol D. Roger and Luffy’s older brother. Throughout the story, Ace was hunting down Blackbeard, a former member of the Whitebeard crew who had betrayed them to gain a powerful ability. He reconnected with Luffy during the Alabasta arc and quickly became a fan favorite thanks to his funny personality, charisma, strength, and shared stubbornness with Luffy. After saying goodbye to Luffy before the battle in Alabasta, Ace finally found Blackbeard and vowed to get revenge.

I was absolutely gutted when it happened! He really didn’t see his opponent’s strength and ended up losing, then the villain just handed him over to the Marines. Can you believe the World Government actually announced his execution worldwide, hoping to draw out one of the Emperors? That’s what kicked off the whole Summit War, and things went completely crazy after that. So many people fought so hard, but sadly, he died trying to protect Luffy. But get this – the newest chapter, 1166, hints that Monkey D. Garp might have actually saved him! I’m still reeling from that possibility!

One Piece Creator Always Wanted to Kill Ace

I remember after the God Valley incident, Dragon ended up in prison for disobeying orders during the Native Hunting Competition. He quickly got his son out, helped him escape, but surprisingly didn’t do the same for Ace. It seemed like Ace had several opportunities to be saved, even though Garp, bound by duty, wouldn’t intervene himself. It’s a bit sad to realize, but it felt like the author, Eiichiro Oda, created Ace specifically to bring about a major turning point in the story – a tragedy that would force Luffy to grow and ultimately lead to the time skip.

After Ace’s popularity soared during the Alabasta arc, Oda’s editor suggested he not kill the character. However, Oda ultimately wanted Ace to die, believing it would be crucial for Luffy’s development and growth. While Oda had planned this outcome, Garp’s decision to allow Ace’s death made him a divisive figure among fans. Although the God Valley flashback shed some light on Garp’s motives, it still didn’t fully explain why letting Ace die was so important to his larger goal of protecting people, especially considering his position just below the rank of an Admiral.
