Please be aware that this article contains spoilers from the One Piece manga! The current flashback storyline in One Piece reveals a pivotal historical event that drastically altered the world. The God Valley Incident was previously hinted at after the Wano Country arc, and Kuma’s backstory offered a brief look at it. However, the complete story is now being shown in the Elbaph Arc flashback. While the story began to explain Harald’s murder, it quickly shifts focus to Rocks D. Xebec, who is being presented in a new light. This introduction challenges previous assumptions about him as a villainous pirate.
Xebec wasn’t responsible for starting the trouble, despite what Sengoku and the World Government said. They actually organized a competition in that location specifically to draw him out, knowing his wife and young son, Marshall D. Teach, were living there. The violent event ended with Xebec’s death, which had a massive impact on the world.
The Aftermath of the God Valley Incident Changed the World of One Piece

During the major event on the island, powerful individuals like Marines, pirates, Holy Knights, and even the mysterious Imu were all present. The battle dramatically altered many lives: the Rocks Pirates were defeated and broken up, while the Roger Pirates encountered Shanks. Garling won the competition and returned home with his son, Shamrock. This event also ignited Blackbeard’s drive to fulfill his father’s ambition and become the King of the World.
Okay, so the newest chapter, 1166, really clarifies why we had to see that God Valley flashback in Harald’s story! It turns out Harald and Xebec were super close, and Xebec’s death completely shook him up. Apparently, Harald was already trying to get on the World Government’s good side before God Valley, but finding out his friend had died just made him even more determined to do so. It really adds a lot of depth to his motivations, you know?
Driven by guilt over the actions of his people, he desperately tried to make amends, even offering to serve the World Government as a slave, hoping to build a better future for the Giants. But in a moment of rash decision-making, torn between his loyalties and personal desires, he lost everything. The story will continue to reveal how the death of Xebec deeply affected him, ultimately leading to his own demise at August Castle fourteen years prior.
