One Piece season 2 ending explained: Who is Mr 0 and what happens to Chopper?

**Warning: contains full spoilers for all episodes of One Piece season 2.**

Now that season 2 of One Piece is finished, Luffy and his crew are a little bit closer to discovering the legendary treasure. However, with so many episodes still left to cover, it will likely be a long time before they find it on Netflix.

That’s alright, there’s plenty happening already! With Chopper joining the crew, Vivi’s trip back to her kingdom, and the threat of Mr. 0 and Baroque Works, there are a lot of different storylines unfolding in One Piece.

So what does this mean for the season 2 finale and what’s to come next?

The second-to-last episode of season 2 was largely a heartbreaking flashback revealing how Tony Tony Chopper met and began training with Dr. Kureha. Now, with a lot of emotion, the story returns to the present to show us how the events on Drum Island will conclude.

One Piece season 2 ending explained: Who is Mr 0 and what happens to Chopper?

The last part of the story starts with Wapol, the ruler of Drum Island, demonstrating his new abilities. He gained these powers by eating a special Devil Fruit given to him by Mr. 0. We see him eat a wooden pole, and then amazingly turn his arm into a metal sword. Wapol’s body now works like a factory, letting him eat anything, change it, and combine it into whatever he needs.

I would eat cakes and turn them into money, but that’s just me.

Dalton, who used to be Wapol’s chief guard, turned against him. He demonstrates his own monstrous side by transforming into a beast resembling a minotaur to retaliate. However, Wapol quickly stabs him and then shockingly transforms his own metallic mouth into an even larger one, seemingly with an arm hidden inside.

Miss All Sunday cruelly mocks Vivi, predicting that her friends and citizens will suffer because of Wapol’s growing army.

It’s true – we saw an arm in his mouth earlier. Apparently, Wapol devoured his whole army, and they’ve been turned into metal creatures he’s using to crush the remaining resistance on Drum Island. That’s really disgusting.

With Usopp and Zoro protecting the village, Vivi heads to Kureha’s secluded home to find Luffy, using a grappling hook that Usopp specially built for the journey.

While the crew is taking a break at Kureha’s castle, Nami hears Sanji reminisce about his childhood, revealing the heartwarming reason he expresses his care for others through cooking. This touching scene provides a welcome moment of calm amidst the ongoing battles, giving Sanji a chance to shine and adding to the emotional impact of the season.

When Vivi came to share the latest news, Kureha suggested they escape, but Chopper insisted they stay and help anyone who might be injured in the upcoming fight. He explained, “A doctor’s job is to help people.”

I just want to smush and squish Chopper’s little cheeks. What a sweetheart.

Wapol unexpectedly showed up, launching a surprise attack from a hidden passage. He started giving a typical villainous speech, but Luffy ignored him, focusing instead on getting ready for the battle by stretching and warming up.

Vivi bravely confronts the cruel dictator and strikes him, while back in the village, Zoro and Usopp realize his robotic soldiers are tougher than they anticipated. Neither Usopp’s special fire attack nor Zoro’s sword skills seem effective against them.

Nami is still recovering from being sick and isn’t strong enough to fight, so Chopper and Sanji step in to protect her from Wapol’s crew. Chopper tries to get stronger, but his transformations aren’t very effective – though we can overlook that because everyone loves little Chopper!

Wapol is trying to eat Luffy, thinking of him as another Devil Fruit! Luffy manages to pry open Wapol’s huge metal mouth with his stretchy arms, and Vivi quickly uses her weapons to slam it shut right before Wapol can fire a cannon. The cannonball ends up exploding inside Wapol’s mouth, and predictably, he’s furious.

“I’m a member of the world’s government,” says Wapol. “Attacking me is a crime.”

It’s funny how a character created decades ago feels more relevant than ever today.

Suddenly, Wapol tries to ruin Luffy’s treasured flag – the one given to him by the late Dr. Hiruluk. It’s a painful memory, but it sparks Luffy into action! He quickly intervenes, jumping in front of Wapol’s cannonball to protect the flag.

Flags are a big deal when you’re trying to be King of the Pirates.

Luffy and Sanji combine their attacks in a powerful aerial move that strongly resembles Wolverine’s ‘cannonball special’ from the X-Men, even though it’s not officially called that.

Now that Luffy had beaten Wapol, he thought Chopper would be joining him and the Straw Hat crew as they continued their journey.

Years of being rejected – first by the other reindeer, and then by his doctor friend – have really hurt Chopper’s confidence. But the rest of the crew doesn’t mind at all. They’re all a bit unusual themselves, and now Chopper fits right in.

Luffy yells, “Just be quiet and come with us!” and surprisingly, it works. Everyone shares a laugh as Chopper happily agrees, creating a really sweet moment. But the good feelings don’t last, as Kureha is upset when she learns Chopper is leaving.

Kureha might seem a little harsh sometimes, but she’s actually just upset about Chopper leaving. She knows he needs to pursue his dreams, and while it’s hard to see him go, she wants what’s best for him.

Okay, so the film really leans into Chopper’s reindeer roots here, and it works! We see him literally pulling the Straw Hats to safety – they’ve turned a castle escape into a full-on sleigh ride to their ship, which has become their new home. It’s a surprisingly heartwarming and visually fun sequence that emphasizes their bond and Chopper’s unique abilities.

Chopper was thrilled with his first pirate ship, but quickly became sad as he understood he was leaving home forever, and tears began to fall.

Chopper suddenly remembered he’d left his backpack full of medicine at home. Luckily, Nami discovered it hidden in the sleigh, suggesting Kureha secretly packed it to support him on his trip.

The supplies contained a jar filled with golden spheres. Chopper initially kept their use a secret from the crew, but since we’re all close, he’s willing to share what they are.

These are actually Rumble Balls – tiny pills created by Chopper to make his transformations stronger. The effect doesn’t last long – only about three minutes – and if he eats too many quickly, he can turn into a giant monster.

The sky lights up then, not with explosions, but with a pink, snow-like substance.

“It looks like cherry blossoms,” says Chopper, watching from the ship.

We then hear the doctor’s voice again, recalling his belief that “When people lose hope, they become afraid.” He thought that seeing the cherry blossoms could restore hope to the islanders and help them resist the oppressive forces.

Chopper starts crying, as expected, but Zoro kindly lifts him onto his shoulder. The crew shares this heartwarming moment as the island transforms, resembling a massive cherry blossom tree. It’s a beautiful sight, and it’s likely this island will be known as Sakura Island going forward, mirroring the story’s original depiction.

Dalton muses that if someone can make cherry blossoms bloom in a frozen place, then anything is possible – even a reindeer becoming a pirate. Kureha chimes in, saying Chopper’s companions must be extraordinary, and wonders if Luffy will ultimately be the one to discover the One Piece.

The crew threw a party on the ship to welcome Chopper, but not everyone was celebrating. One person seemed unhappy.

Vivi expresses sadness about leaving, believing everyone will part ways after she returns home to her kingdom.

That’s the plan,” Luffy confirmed, “but first we need to beat Baroque Works and help Vivi save her kingdom, Arabasta.

“You’re one of us too,” says Zoro. “And friends help each other.”

“I never should have doubted it,” replies Vivi. “I appreciate you all.”

Now that this has happened, Vivi understands she needs to share with her friends what she discovered about the Baroque Works during her time working with them in secret.

In a closing scene, Miss All Sunday informs her supervisor at Baroque Works that Wapo’s mission was unsuccessful. However, Mr. 0 remains unconcerned, stating that the funds from Wapo’s royal treasury will actually benefit their operation.

“Don’t you mean your cause?” replies Miss All Sunday.

“What’s good for me is good for you,” he replies rather vaguely. “For all of us, Nico Robin.”

“I’ve told you not to call me by that name,” says Miss All Sunday, aka, Nico Robin.

Mr. 0 is unconcerned with the current situation. He’s focused on starting Operation Utopia, which he believes will allow him to conquer Arabasta and bring him closer to finding the One Piece.

The scene widens to reveal his hideout is beneath the water, and a massive, crocodile-like creature is swimming nearby.

So who is Nico Robin? Who is Mr 0? And why should we care about Operation Utopia?

Robin is a fascinating character with a hidden past. She’s not just a skilled assassin; she’s the last person alive from Ohara who can decipher ancient texts called Poneglyphs. These texts hold dangerous secrets that the World Government wants to keep hidden. You can expect Robin to play a major role in season 3, and her connection with the Straw Hat crew will face some unexpected challenges and revelations.

Mr. 0, also known as Crocodile, is a master manipulator who deceives both the Arabastan people and the Marines. He pretends to be an ally while secretly using his organization, Baroque Works, to destabilize Arabasta and prepare for a takeover. This also means he’s secretly working against the World Government.

Crocodile is set to be a major threat in season 3, and the Straw Hats have good reason to be concerned. His power to transform into sand makes him incredibly dangerous – he’s arguably the toughest opponent Luffy and the crew have ever encountered. He’s actually the first to ever beat Luffy in a fight, based on the original story.

Crocodile’s plan, called Operation Utopia, is to eliminate King Cobra of Arabasta and take over the kingdom. He believes an ancient weapon called Pluton is hidden within Arabasta, and he wants to find it. With Pluton, Crocodile hopes to build a powerful nation that could rival the World Government, but the Straw Hat Pirates are determined to stop him.

It’s easy to picture Luffy achieving this, but it likely won’t be without consequences. We’ll have to wait and see what happens when season 3 arrives on Netflix, probably within the next year or two.

One Piece is available to stream on Netflix.
