One Piece Star Joe Manganiello Teases Crocodile’s Dark Origin

One Piece Star Joe Manganiello Teases Crocodile's Dark Origin

As a longtime fan of the One Piece series, I can hardly contain my excitement about Netflix’s live-action adaptation. The latest news from Geeked Week Event has sent shivers down my spine – Joe Manganiello, a true powerhouse actor, is set to play none other than Crocodile! This villainous Warlord of the Sea will undoubtedly bring a dark and captivating presence to Season Two.

Among the numerous exciting disclosures at Netflix’s Geeked Week Event, the live-action adaptation of “One Piece” certainly made some of the most significant announcements. To start with, it was confirmed that Lera Above will play Ms. All Sunday, aka future Straw Hat Nico Robin, and Joe Manganiello will portray Crocodile. The Sea King, also known as the “big bad” of the Alabasta Arc, is Crocodile’s character, and Manganiello has already expressed his fondness for the shonen series he will now be part of. In a recent interview, the future Crocodile delves into his villain’s backstory before his appearance in Netflix’s “One Piece” Season Two.

As a devoted fan, I’d like to highlight one of the most formidable villains in the shonen series, One Piece’s Crocodile. This character stands out due to his unique Devil Fruit powers that enable him to transform into sand, command it, and even drain moisture from whatever he touches. His menacing presence has solidified him as a major antagonist sailing the Grand Line. Unlike Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates who are on a quest to find the One Piece, Crocodile harbors aspirations of ruling the land of Alabasta with an unyielding grip. To achieve this goal, he has assembled the powerful organization known as Baroqueworks.

Crocodile’s Dark Origin

In a recent interview, Joe Manganiello explained his character’s development, suggesting that Crocodile’s history with Whitebeard shapes his villainous destiny in the anime. He described Crocodile as the opposite side of Luffy, hinting at a possible dark future for Luffy if he succumbs to the pain of defeat or lets it fester like Crocodile did after Whitebeard. Manganiello further explained that Crocodile harbors a desire for everyone to experience the suffering he endured after Whitebeard, due to his disappointment at not becoming Pirate King and his mistrust towards friends. Of course, Crocodile’s character also embodies the fear of betrayal and the consequences of not trusting others.

Explaining Crocodile’s Past

Previously, the Sea’s Ruler had seen Roger’s execution. Similar to Luffy, Crocodile aspired to be a pirate king someday; however, this ambition vanished when he faced Whitebeard in combat, leaving him utterly defeated. Subsequently, Crocodile started building his own military force composed of bounty hunters and criminals within Baroqueworks, which served as his tool for unscrupulous deeds.

Although Crocodile may seem like a villain, he disguises his true intentions by defending Alabasta, the desert kingdom he desires. Meanwhile, the Straw Hats are busy dealing with Baroqueworks elsewhere on the island. However, Crocodile’s sole focus is on claiming this valuable territory as his own. Regarding Joe Manganiello, many anime enthusiasts believe that he was an exceptional choice to play this role due to his passion for the franchise and his knack for delivering a convincing villainous performance.

Crocodile’s Cross Guild

In both comic (manga) and animated (anime) versions of One Piece, Crocodile has established a new group, determined as ever to locate the elusive One Piece. Known as the Cross Guild, this organization is led by heavyweights such as Crocodile, Mihawk, and Buggy. However, it’s important to note that Buggy, the pirate clown, pales in comparison to his two associates. Recently, during Geeked Week, One Piece showrunner Matt Owens hinted at the Cross Guild when actors Joe Manganiello and Jeff Ward appeared together on stage.
