Be warned, this article contains spoilers from the One Piece manga! The story is nearing a reveal of the long-hidden secrets of the Void Century. After detailing the past with Harald and the events at God Valley, the manga returns to the present. Luffy and his crew now face the Holy Knights, who are trying to take over the kingdom. They plan to use hostages – taking the children – to force the Giants into surrendering. But the battle will likely take a surprising turn with Luffy, Loki, and other powerful fighters ready to defend the island. Chapter 1171 ends the backstory with a stunning revelation: Imu exposes Elbaph as the true meaning of the ‘D’.
Imu appears weakened, possibly due to the recent, violent death of the Giant. The villain believes the Giants’ lineage is inherently warlike and that Harald, a king who prioritized peace and rejected his heritage, was unfit to rule and ultimately failed to achieve anything. The chapter offers little explanation about the mysterious symbol “D,” but a fan translation online suggests a possible meaning.
One Piece’s Imu Reveals The Meaning Behind The “D”

DawnStussy, a Japanese-to-English fan translator on X, explained that the original Japanese version of Imu’s statement has a different meaning than what’s been translated in English. The English translation makes it sound straightforward, but the original Japanese is more complex and open to interpretation. According to DawnStussy, the Japanese phrasing suggests a metaphorical idea rather than a concrete definition. In contrast, the official English translation specifically suggests that ‘D’ represents either a title or a family lineage.
The chapter ends abruptly after Imu makes a puzzling statement, leaving readers with more questions than answers. This enigmatic world leader, aware of the world’s hidden past, asserts that their group is fundamentally unable to peacefully coexist with the Giants.
The manga frequently references the “Will of D.,” and it’s clear that characters with the letter “D.” in their name play significant roles. From Luffy and Blackbeard to Roger and others, these individuals have all greatly shaped the story’s world. While the importance of the Will of D. is consistently highlighted, its true meaning remains shrouded in mystery.
