The anime adaptation of One Piece has frequently faced criticism from fans regarding how Sanji is portrayed, and this has become a recurring issue, especially during the recent Egghead Incident Arc. Many viewers have lost hope that the anime will do justice to Sanji’s character. The dissatisfaction with scenes in Egghead was so strong it even reached the studio, who maintain they aren’t intentionally favoring certain characters. Because Toei Animation only adapts one chapter of the manga per episode, the anime often includes unnecessary filler and slows down the action. Sanji, despite being a popular character, is often negatively affected by this pacing.
The animation studio frequently adds unnecessary comedic scenes to stretch out episodes, which many viewers find frustrating. Some fans are also unhappy with how slowly certain scenes featuring a usually fast character are animated, diminishing his impact. While Sanji and Zoro are both considered incredibly strong members of the crew, and their power levels appear similar in the original manga, the anime portrays a noticeable difference. In the recent Episode 1147, set during the events in Egghead, fans were particularly disappointed with the animation, especially as Sanji was expected to be a central focus.
Sanji Fans Again Disappointed By One Piece Studio After Watching Episode 1147

Sanji dramatically rescued Bonney and Franky from Ethanbaron V. Nusjuro, a powerful member of the Five Elders who arrived on the island to confront Vegapunk and the Straw Hat Pirates. When he saw his friends were in trouble, Sanji immediately intervened, delivering a powerful kick to the villain while the pirate’s earlier attack continued to burn through half of Nusjuro’s massive body. Despite being outmatched, this moment—fueled by Sanji’s determination to save his friends while carrying the critically injured Vegapunk—stands out as one of his most memorable actions during the Egghead Incident arc.
This episode isn’t a standout, but the animation is good for a weekly series. It’s unrealistic to expect every One Piece episode to reach the high quality of well-known episodes like 1112, 1115, and 1136. The real issue is that fans were hoping for extra effort on moments featuring Sanji, especially his first meeting with one of the Five Elders, and were disappointed the studio didn’t seem to prioritize those scenes in the anime.
This year in April, a fan animation by @klosekkj of a well-known scene became incredibly popular online, surpassing what fans hoped for. While exciting moments in One Piece aren’t always perfectly animated, Episode 1141 recently delivered a great portrayal of a character blocking a strong attack from Admiral Kizaru. The latest episode, 1147, concludes with a surprising revelation about the future, as Vegapunk begins a long-awaited broadcast revealing secrets from the past.
