Like most action-packed anime, One Piece features a special power system. This world mainly revolves around two types of powers: Devil Fruits and Haki. Devil Fruits appeared early in the series and grant unique abilities to anyone who eats them, but mastering those abilities takes skill. For example, Luffy’s Devil Fruit turned his body into rubber, and he had to train hard to use it effectively in fights. Haki, introduced later in the story, is often even more powerful than Devil Fruit abilities. Haki comes from a person’s willpower and allows them to perform incredible feats. There are three kinds of Haki: Observation, Armament, and Conqueror’s.
Everyone in the world of One Piece possesses a special ability called Haki, but it needs to be unlocked through rigorous training or a deeply emotional experience to be used. Luffy developed his Haki during the two-year timeskip while training with Silvers Rayleigh, a former close advisor to the Pirate King. Although there were brief suggestions of Haki before the timeskip, the series didn’t fully showcase characters using it until after those two years. Interestingly, a recent discovery reveals that Viz Media, the English publisher of One Piece, didn’t include a translation of the very first mention of Haki in the manga.
One Piece’s Blackbeard Was the First Character to Mention Haki

The One Piece manga is originally published in Japanese, and Viz Media translates it into English for Western audiences. But sometimes, jokes and subtle meanings don’t come across perfectly when translating from Japanese. A well-known fan translator on X, @sandman_AP, pointed out that the concept of Haki was actually introduced in the manga as early as 2002. In one scene, the powerful pirate Blackbeard saw Luffy’s wanted poster and wondered if Luffy’s Haki was the reason for his relatively low bounty. However, Viz Media’s translation made it seem like Blackbeard was questioning whether Luffy was strong enough to deserve such a high bounty.
As a long-time One Piece fan, I was so hyped to see Haki first introduced in this scene! But what really struck me was how perceptive Blackbeard is. He and Luffy only had a quick meeting in Mock Town, but Blackbeard instantly recognized Luffy’s potential – that’s incredible! It really highlights why he’s such a major villain, and puts things in perspective knowing he’s now one of the Four Emperors, just like Luffy!
