The Elbaf Arc in One Pieces is presently delving into Harald’s past, chronicling the life of the much-loved King of Giants who aspired to elevate his kingdom to new heights. Tragically, Harald passed away under mysterious circumstances at Aurust Castle over 14 years ago, before realizing his dream. Since Loki, Harald’s second son and Elbaf’s infamous Cursed Prince, was present at the scene of the crime, there were immediate suspicions about him. However, prior to the unveiling of the true circumstances surrounding Harald’s death, One Piece provides a backstory that follows Harald’s transformation from an impulsive Giant to a compassionate king.
Interestingly, the narrative doesn’t solely revolve around the protagonist, but also delves into Loki’s tragic childhood and the tale of Rocks D. Xebec, a renowned pirate who met his end during the God Valley Incident. His crew disbanded following his death, and until recently, the series had kept Rocks’ face hidden, hinting at Oda’s strategic timing in introducing this legendary figure. It turns out that Blackbeard’s father was none other than Rocks, who initially seized control of Hachinosu. Their relationship with Harald spans over a decade; however, the bond was broken when Harald agreed to the World Government’s request to eliminate Rocks, marking his betrayal.
Why Did Harald Try to Kill Rocks?
Harald tirelessly worked to challenge and overcome the prejudices directed towards his people. For generations, Giants had earned respect as formidable warriors, but this did not prevent them from being perceived negatively by many outside their community, much like Luffy and Usopp’s views may differ. Due to their towering stature and immense power, Giants were often feared by ordinary humans. Moreover, the destructive actions of some Giant pirates worsened their reputation even further. Additionally, this was one of the main reasons Elbaf remained behind in terms of development, as it had little contact with other nations and remained largely isolated from the world.
Harald yearned intensely to alter that situation and spent numerous years seeking a means to associate with the World Government. This affiliation would promote harmony and diplomatic relations within the nation, and additionally prevent a circumstance where Giants were compelled to act as soldiers for the World Government against their will. Regrettably, the Five Elders disregarded diplomacy, focusing instead on exploiting the Giants’ strength, even if it required forceful means.
Approximately four decades past, Rocks had established a formidable reputation and was growing steadily stronger, to the point where he threatened the powerful Mariejois. His powers were nearly as potent as Harald’s during that era. In order to secure the World Government’s backing, it was stipulated that Harald would have to eliminate Rocks if the need arose. They didn’t cross paths again until the tragic God Valley Incident in Chapter 1158.
One Piece’s Chapter 1158 Delivers the Worst Betrayal to Rocks
In my observation, about half a century ago during the Reverie Incident, I chanced upon Harald who had abducted five monarchs, aiming to negotiate with Imu. However, when Imu ignored his proposals, Harald fled from the Sacred Realm, leading to an admiral’s unfortunate demise in the process. A confrontation ensued between him and another party at the scene, resulting in a cataclysmic clash that obliterated everything within a five-kilometer vicinity. This encounter left me profoundly amazed by Harald’s power, prompting me to seek out the Giant King soon after our initial meeting.
At that point, Rocks was being pursued by authorities, and he wanted Harald on his team to capture Marie Jois. Given his circumstances, Harald couldn’t help but decline, which only fueled Rocks’ determination. Despite Kaido suggesting to compel Harald to join the crew, Rocks persistently pleaded with him. This consistent persuasion led him to frequently travel to Elbaf for over a decade.
Harold found Rocks’ companionship peculiar, yet he appreciated his presence, given that he had the chance to prevent the pirate from reaching the island but chose not to interfere. In their clash during Chapter 1158, Harold appeared distressed by the situation, but was compelled to direct his weapon at Rocks in order to secure a brighter future for his community. Since they were equally matched in power, the battle lacked a decisive winner, but it was evident that their friendship had suffered significant damage.
