The narrative continuation of “One Piece” introduces Harald, the late king and father of Loki, who was revered as King of Elbaf. His reign ended 14 years prior to the story’s main events, leaving behind a kingdom that deeply respected him for his vision of making Elbaf a better nation. Despite its long history, Elbaf had not advanced technologically or provided adequate education due to the Giants’ preference for fighting and exploration over other pursuits. It was Harald, under Saul’s guidance, who established the Walrus School for the children. Tragically, following his demise, Harald’s son was accused of his murder and the massacre of 113 guards within the Aurust Castle during that time period.
In their already deep-seated animosity towards Loki, the Giants became enraged to an unprecedented degree when they unexpectedly lost their king due to the Cursed Prince’s insatiable greed. Loki didn’t stay on the island for long after this tragic event; he was captured by Shanks six years ago and has since been imprisoned in the Underworld, serving a punishment for crimes he did not commit. Chapter 1152 has confirmed that Loki was innocent all along, and the full story behind the incident is much more intricate than the Giants currently understand. However, before unveiling Harald’s true murderer, the story of One Piece begins to delve into his past, tracing his life from when he ruled the kingdom to the birth of his sons. As we learn more about Harald, it becomes increasingly evident that he bears a striking resemblance to Otohime, the late Queen of the Ryugu Kingdom.
Harald and Otohime Both Tried to Make Nice With the World Government
The World Government, notorious for its oppressive rule and corrupt practices, nonetheless offers certain perks for affiliation. In return for a “Heavenly levy” and relinquishing some autonomy, it guarantees protection from pirates and other dangers, offers access to resources, and facilitates trade benefits – advantages that are particularly valuable for marginalized races like the Fish-Men and Giants. Harald, once a pirate, gained extensive knowledge of the world and aspired to establish trade connections for his people.
He didn’t prefer for Elbaf to continue as a secluded kingdom, isolated from other lands. While Harald aimed to establish diplomatic ties with various kingdoms, the World Government consistently hindered his efforts. Despite knowing that the World Government had its flaws, he ultimately chose to work towards an alliance with them because it seemed like the only way to prevent the Giants from being shunned further.
In much the same vein as Queen Otohime, whose aspirations echoed mine, I sought to foster a harmonious coexistence with the World Government. Despite centuries of hardship and strife, I persevered, holding onto hope that one day, peace would be attained between our races. Alas, Otohime’s journey was abruptly ended by Hody Jones’ treachery, and Harald met an untimely end at the hands of his own soldiers. The motives behind their actions remain shrouded in mystery, and on that fateful day, they all fell, taking the truth with them to the grave. Loki and Jarul are the only ones who know the truth, but for 14 years, they have kept silent on the matter.
Otohime’s Legacy Lives On to This Day
In the series, Otohime is often overlooked as one of the less prominent characters, yet she possesses an admirable spirit. She tirelessly worked around the clock to break the cycle of enmity between humans and Fish-People, a task that earned her criticism from her own people but ultimately won over many hearts. Her tale was unveiled through flashbacks, resonating deeply with viewers. Otohime endeavored to collect signatures from every member of her kingdom for a petition advocating for improved relations with humans. Although her dream of coexisting peacefully on the surface with her people didn’t come true during her lifetime, her efforts were not in vain.
She established a connection for the Ryugu Kingdom, enabling it to become an associated kingdom, and they made their debut in the Reverie. When Shirahoshi was threatened by Saint Charlos, no one could intervene, but eventually, Saint Mjosgard rescued her as a gesture of gratitude towards the late queen who had previously saved his life many years prior. While much about Harald’s past remains unclear, it is certain that despite his contentious actions, he continues to be cherished by his people, similarly to Otohime.
