One Piece’s Live-Action Chopper Didn’t Know What She Was Auditioning For

This year, it was finally disclosed by Netflix who would don the role of Tony Tony Chopper in the upcoming second season of the live-action “One Piece.” Using computer-generated imagery, the Straw Hat Pirates’ doctor is portrayed by Mikaela Hoover, a name familiar to many moviegoers due to her recent stint in James Gunn’s “Superman” film. In a recent chat, Hoover shared that she landed this role unaware that she was auditioning for a voyage across the Grand Line.

In a conversation with Collider, I shared my experience of being part of the original series, Beef, before unexpectedly trying out for the role of Luffy’s favorite M.D. in One Piece. At that time, I was engrossed in filming for Netflix’s ‘Beef’, and my primary focus was on it. My agent, Stephanie, graciously offered me an audition, but I declined, stating my need to concentrate on ‘Beef’. It’s fascinating to look back now, but they didn’t provide a breakdown of the role at that time. They don’t typically disclose details like, “This is for One Piece and Chopper”, so I had no clue about what the audition was for, and I simply wanted to stay committed to ‘Beef’.

Chopper x Hoover: A Match Made in Heaven

Stephanie expressed her feelings about being connected to Tony Tony Chopper before the live-action second season begins, saying, “They asked for you specifically for your voice,” she told me. I replied, “Okay, I’ll give it a look.” The character description didn’t include details like where the character was or what it was for. However, when I read the lines for him, I felt a strong connection. I enjoyed auditioning for the role so much because it reminded me of why I started acting in the first place and chose this career path. In other words, I had a blast while auditioning for him.

Excitedly sharing insights on the contrast between fan expectations for anime voice-overs, particularly in “One Piece” season 2, I explained how people anticipate a likeness to the original version. Yet, during auditions and recordings, I infused my own interpretation of Chopper’s character, blending aspects of my personality with his initial portrayal and personal experiences. Essentially, I made Chopper my own!
